What does a robotics design engineer do?

A Robotics Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic systems and components. They use principles from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to create robots that can perform specific tasks or functions. Their work involves creating blueprints, modeling designs, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the robots meet performance and safety standards. Robotics Design Engineers also troubleshoot and refine prototypes, ensuring their reliability and efficiency before deployment. This role is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics design engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering, usually with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills help set candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure the effective design, integration, and troubleshooting of advanced robotic systems for diverse applications.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics design engineers when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

Robotics Design Engineers often encounter challenges when moving from prototype development to mass production, such as ensuring component reliability, optimizing designs for manufacturability, and maintaining cost efficiency without sacrificing performance. They must collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to refine product designs, address supply chain constraints, and ensure that regulatory standards are met. Effective communication and iterative testing are essential to identify and resolve issues early, facilitating a smoother transition to large-scale manufacturing.

What is the difference between Robotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; often certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; professional engineering license (PE) optional)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, robotics development facilities, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, design offices, research labs
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design
Common Search/ComparisonRobotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer

Robotics Design Engineers focus on creating robotic systems, integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems, often requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical components and systems, with a broader scope across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Design Engineers typically have specialized skills in robotics and automation, making them distinct yet overlapping with Mechanical Engineers in certain projects.

Do robotics design engineers get paid well?

Robotics design engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to the specialized skills required, such as knowledge of mechanical systems, programming, and CAD tools. Salaries vary based on experience, education, and location but generally align with engineering industry standards for technical roles.

What do robotics design engineers design?

Robotics design engineers develop and create robotic systems, including mechanical components, electrical circuits, and control software. They use CAD software and simulation tools to design robots for applications such as manufacturing, healthcare, or exploration, ensuring functionality, safety, and efficiency.

Job description

We are seeking a Software Engineer to contribute to the development of XR applications for teleoperating Fauna robots. You will work at the intersection of XR engineering and real-time robotics, writing the code that drives the backend of our XR application, from full-body pose projection, operator calibration and telemetry, to the performance and optimization that keeps the teleoperator and the robot in sync. Your decisions will directly shape how operators and data collectors experience the robot from inside the headset.

You will design for the extremes-ensuring a flawless, low-latency experience despite unpredictable real-world network conditions, and implement improvements to tracking, robot communication, and ergonomic and UX challenges characteristic to prolonged XR wear.
Key job responsibilities
- Develop and maintain our Meta Quest applications built in Unity for XR teleoperation and data collection
- Write production-quality C# in an event-driven, well-structured Unity codebase, using the Meta XR SDK for full-body tracking and interaction
- Own the live connection between the headset and the robot: real-time pose streams, telemetry and command channels, and audio/video links - debug, harden, and extend these network interfaces as the system evolves
- Maintain and improve our pose projection pipeline, calibration flow, and state-aware input system so operators can drive the robot reliably with optimal ergonomic comfort and strict operational safety guardrails
- Build functional in-headset interfaces and HUDs for teleoperators and data collectors - accessing telemetry data, using menus while teleoperating the robot, managing recording sessions, and intervening during autonomy without leaving XR
- Iterate on operator-facing flows in Unity Editor, including audio-visual guidance from a virtual robot companion that walks operators through calibration, teleoperation, and data collection tasks
- Integrate with backend services to manage data collection tasks, robot selection, and telemetry
- Collaborate with robotics, ML, and operations engineers to translate teleoperation and data-collection requirements into shipping XR features that will augment their workflows
About the team
Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company, is building capable, safe, and genuinely delightful robots for everyday life. Our goal is simple: make robots people actually want to live and interact with in everyday human spaces.

We believe that future won't arrive until building for robotics becomes far more accessible. Today, too much effort is spent reinventing the fundamentals. We're changing that by developing tightly integrated hardware and software systems that make it faster, safer, and more intuitive to create real-world robotic products.

Our work spans the full stack: mechanical design, control systems, dynamic modeling, and intelligent software. The focus is not just functionality, but experience. We're building robots that feel responsive, expressive, and genuinely useful.

At Fauna, you'll work at the frontier of this space, helping define how robots move, manipulate, and interact with people in natural environments. It's an opportunity to solve hard problems across hardware and software with a team focused on making robotics accessible and joyful to build.
If you care about making robotics real for everyone and building systems that are as delightful as they are capable, we're interested in hearing from you.
