What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering, usually with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills help set candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure the effective design, integration, and troubleshooting of advanced robotic systems for diverse applications.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Design Engineers when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

Robotics Design Engineers often encounter challenges when moving from prototype development to mass production, such as ensuring component reliability, optimizing designs for manufacturability, and maintaining cost efficiency without sacrificing performance. They must collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to refine product designs, address supply chain constraints, and ensure that regulatory standards are met. Effective communication and iterative testing are essential to identify and resolve issues early, facilitating a smoother transition to large-scale manufacturing.

What does a Robotics Design Engineer do?

A Robotics Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic systems and components. They use principles from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to create robots that can perform specific tasks or functions. Their work involves creating blueprints, modeling designs, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the robots meet performance and safety standards. Robotics Design Engineers also troubleshoot and refine prototypes, ensuring their reliability and efficiency before deployment. This role is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automation.

What is the difference between Robotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; often certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; professional engineering license (PE) optional)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, robotics development facilities, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, design offices, research labs
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design
Common Search/ComparisonRobotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer

Robotics Design Engineers focus on creating robotic systems, integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems, often requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical components and systems, with a broader scope across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Design Engineers typically have specialized skills in robotics and automation, making them distinct yet overlapping with Mechanical Engineers in certain projects.

We are supporting a confidential industrial automation and custom equipment manufacturer seeking a Controls Engineer to support the design, programming, startup, and deployment of automated manufacturing systems.

This is a hands-on, project-based role ideal for an early-career to mid-level Controls Engineer who enjoys working with PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and electrical design in a custom automation environment. This role is not a plant maintenance position — engineers are involved throughout the full equipment lifecycle, from design and programming through commissioning, testing, and customer acceptance.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation / controls engineering
  • PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley, Keyence, or similar platforms)
  • Experience programming industrial robots or cobots (Fanuc, Universal Robots, Doosan, or similar)
  • Experience with vision systems (Keyence, Cognex, or similar)
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety circuits
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship

Preferred Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with HMI and motion control systems
  • Exposure to SQL Server / database setup
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar electrical design software
  • Experience supporting equipment startups, runoffs, and commissioning
  • Comfortable supporting projects outside of first shift as needed

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Program and support PLCs, robotics, and vision systems for custom automation equipment
  • Support equipment startup, testing, commissioning, and customer acceptance
  • Design and support electrical systems including control panels, wiring, and circuits
  • Support field wiring, debugging, and system troubleshooting
  • Diagnose electrical and controls issues and implement corrective actions
  • Support creation of project documentation and training materials
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to transition equipment into production
  • Communicate project status and technical details with customers and internal stakeholders

Physical and Environment Requirements

Physical expectations and working conditions may include standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods; lifting up to 30–50 lbs; working at varying heights; and working in a manufacturing or industrial environment. Some onsite installation and support work may be required.

Company Benefits & Culture
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
