What does a robotic software engineer intern do?

A Robotic Software Engineer Intern assists in developing, testing, and maintaining software that controls robotic systems. They typically work with teams to write code for robotics applications, debug and improve existing software, and support integration with hardware components. Interns may also help with simulation, automation tasks, and data analysis to enhance robot performance. This role is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with robotics platforms, programming languages like Python or C++, and industry-standard tools.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a robotic software engineer intern?

To thrive as a Robotic Software Engineer Intern, you need foundational knowledge in robotics, programming (often Python or C++), and basic understanding of control systems, typically supported by coursework in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with robotics frameworks like ROS (Robot Operating System), simulation tools such as Gazebo, and version control systems like Git is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, curiosity, and effective teamwork skills help you adapt quickly and contribute meaningfully to projects. These skills are important because they enable you to actively participate in development, collaborate with experienced engineers, and accelerate your learning in a fast-paced robotics environment.

Robotics Engineer

Baton Rouge, LA

What we do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for protecting freedom with innovation. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience transforming research into fieldable technology. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, cyber security, and advanced manufacturing. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs... at the speed of relevance.

Company Benefits

  • Base salaries which exceed local & national industry averages.
  • Year-end performance-based bonuses.
  • 401(k) with company matching that vest immediately.
  • Integer fully covers medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance costs for the employee and dependents, meaning the Integer standard plan pays 100% of health insurance premiums for your entire family from a well-known national insurer, saving its employees thousands of dollars annually.
  • Relocation assistance available.
  • Paid vacation, sick/personal leave, and holidays.
  • Paid bereavement and parental leave.
  • Hybrid schedule: Mondays and Fridays are optional to work from home or in the office.

Company Perks

  • Startup culture with the stability of a large company. Integer's business plan has years of time phased contracted work, alleviating the would-be risk from a traditional small company.
  • Direct access to company leadership, prioritization of people over process, and a stellar team with a shared desire for personal and professional growth.
  • Friendly atmosphere where people enjoy not only their work and what they're creating but enjoy helping each other as well.
  • Bottomless Coffee!

About the Role

Integer Technologies is seeking an Autonomy Engineer to support the design, development, and deployment of advanced autonomy software on maritime robotic platforms. This role involves end-to-end contributions across the autonomy stack-including perception, mapping, localization, and control-tailored for real-world performance in constrained and uncertain environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sensor fusion, state estimation, and real-time robotics software development, with hands-on experience in both simulation and field testing. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, eligible for a DoD security clearance, and capable of working across multidisciplinary teams to deliver scalable, maintainable, and mission-ready systems. Experience in maritime autonomy, multi-agent coordination, and distributed systems is highly desirable.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Autonomous Systems Integration Deploy autonomy algorithms across the full software stack-including perception, localization, mapping, and control-in simulation and on physical robotic platforms.
  • Sensor Fusion & State Estimation Work with sensors and sensor data (e.g., GPS, IMU, LiDAR, sonar, cameras) to help improve navigation and situational awareness using techniques like Kalman Filters or particle filters.
  • Probabilistic Decision-Making & Autonomy Behavior Implement and tune probabilistic reasoning methods to support autonomous behavior selection in partially observable environments.
  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) & Simulation-Based Testing Set up and use HIL environments and high-fidelity simulations to evaluate autonomy algorithms and ensure real-world readiness under varied operational scenarios and failure modes.
  • Experimental Validation & Demonstration Execute field tests and simulations to validate autonomy behavior and system performance, using the results to refine system design.
  • Documentation & Technical Communication Develop clear, concise technical documentation, including interface specifications, deployment guides, and post-test analysis reporting.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a US DoD Secret clearance.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field; advanced degrees preferred.
  • 2+ years of professional experience developing, deploying, or integrating autonomy software and hardware systems.
  • Must have experience in the implementation of autonomy algorithms for perception, mapping, localization, and/or control.
  • Integrate sensors (e.g., GPS, IMU, camera, LiDAR, sonar) for robust sensor fusion and situational awareness.
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages (e.g., C++, Python) and experience with middleware such as DDS, MQTT, Zenoh, ROS, or other real-time communication frameworks.
  • Familiarity with sensor fusion and state estimation techniques such as particle filters and Extended Kalman Filters with practical experience applying these methods to real-world robotic navigation and localization problems.
  • Deep understanding of autonomy frameworks, decision-making algorithms, and real-time system constraints in distributed, multi-agent environments.
  • Comfortable working in both field test environments and simulation environments; experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing is advantageous.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to interface across multidisciplinary teams and external partners.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing autonomy software for maritime, aerospace, or ground robotics systems operating in GPS-denied or communications-constrained environments.
  • Experience defining requirements for robotics systems.
  • Experience using Robot Operating System (ROS/ROS2).
  • Knowledge of control theory and vehicle kinematics/dynamics
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, multi-agent coordination, or swarm autonomy concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with containerized deployment (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) on embedded or ruggedized platforms.
  • Active Secret or higher DoD security clearance.
