Overview
MPI is a worldwide leader in manufacturing specialized equipment for the investment casting industry. We are looking for a hands-on senior controls engineer to develop, design and collaborate on the creation of control systems for our equipment. This includes: leading the team through multiple projects, creating electrical schematics, PLC program logic, developing and modifying controls, and ensuring our equipment is safe, efficient and cutting-edge. This position leads a team of engineers who are responsible for developing customized solutions for the industry. Hands-on robotic programming experience for complex automation projects is desirable.

Responsibilities
  • Supports MPI lean culture and initiatives by attending and participating in daily lean meetings while supporting efforts to make continuous improvements throughout MPI.
  • Project Supervision: Oversees the completion of an electrical design for a project with limited supervision. Works directly with Sr. Mechanical Engineer to satisfy project requirements. These responsibilities include the following:
  • Provides guidance and direction to other Controls engineers
  • Estimating hours required for the Controls portion of the project.
  • Electrical enclosure design support.
  • Electrical schematic design.
  • Hands-on PLC and HMI programming.
  • Hands-on Robotic programming is desirable.
  • Knowledge of vision systems is desirable.
  • Project documentation, including operation instructions.
  • Project checking.
  • Manufacturing assembly support.
  • Electrical Design: Responsible for creating electrical schematics, plc program logic, and electrical enclosure designs within the constraints determined by the given project, time, cost, performance.
  • Global decision making: Takes into consideration the short- and long-term impact of a decision along with the effect the decision has on the entire organization. (Does what's best for the company)
  • Documentation: Responsible for ensuring MPI documentation standards are followed and completed. (ECR's, machine manuals, check lists, etc.)
  • Scheduling & Reports: Responsible for reporting the status of the project in accordance with Epicor Projects (MPI's information system) and the engineering production schedule at each weekly meeting. If a problem occurs that requires immediate attention, it is the Sr. Engineer's responsibility to report to the Principal Engineer or department manager.
  • Comm/SAT: When required capable to travel to customers site to support installation, commissioning, and Site acceptance testing.
  • Follows ANSI & OSHA standards and MPI safety rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Principal Activities:
  • This is a leadership position focused on project management and controls design; individuals will spend 50% of their effort toward project-based activities.
  • Key activities in scope:
  • Performs and supports all activities for Controls Engineers, continuous improvement, PLC, HMI, and Robot controls design, etc.
  • Maintains project schedule and Epicor projects for on time delivery
  • Performs tasks as described in MPI document "Eng Task List Rxx"
  • Supervisory activities
  • Activities out of scope:
  • 50% of available time is not available for project-based activities.
  • Project planning

Qualifications
  • Experience in electrical design and programming of capital equipment that includes mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic assemblies.
  • Sound understanding of electrical design, schematics, and electrical codes regarding machine tool design.
  • Sound computer skills, MS Office, Cad for Schematic creation.
  • Vast knowledge of machine tool electrical design.
  • Vast knowledge of PLC programming. Omron, AB, and Siemens are desirable.
  • .Vast knowledge of HMI programming. Indusoft is desirable.
  • Vast knowledge of Robotics' programming. ABB and Fanuc are desirable.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office, Cad for schematics, and MPI information system "Epicor"
  • Ability to know when to seek guidance.
  • Ability to evaluate a process for efficiency and waste
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Methodical approach to problem solving
  • Flexible, able to react to changing needs.
  • Advanced communication skills, able to work with and lead others.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, plus 6 to 10 years of related experience.
