What are some typical projects a Robotic Process Automation Developer Intern might work on during their internship?

As a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer Intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve designing, developing, and testing automated workflows using RPA tools such as UiPath or Automation Anywhere. Common tasks include analyzing business processes to identify automation opportunities, building and debugging bots to handle repetitive tasks, and collaborating with business analysts and senior developers to optimize efficiency. You may also assist in documenting solutions and supporting the deployment of automation in real business environments. These experiences provide valuable insights into RPA best practices and prepare you for more advanced roles in automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotic Process Automation Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming concepts, process analysis, and familiarity with automation principles, often supported by coursework in computer science or related fields. Experience with RPA tools such as UiPath, Blue Prism, or Automation Anywhere, along with knowledge of scripting languages like Python or VB.NET, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure you can design, implement, and maintain efficient automation solutions that optimize business processes and support operational goals.

What does a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer Intern do?

A Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer Intern assists in designing, developing, and implementing software robots (bots) that automate repetitive tasks within business processes. They typically work with RPA tools like UiPath, Blue Prism, or Automation Anywhere to create, test, and maintain automation workflows under the guidance of senior developers. Their responsibilities may also include documenting processes, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other teams to understand automation requirements. This role provides hands-on experience in both programming and process improvement, making it valuable for students interested in technology and business efficiency.

Description & Requirements
The energy of a newsroom, the pace of a trading floor, the buzz of a recent tech breakthrough; we work hard, and we work fast - while keeping up the quality and accuracy we're known for. It's what keeps us inventing and reinventing, all the time. Our culture is wide open, just like our spaces. We bring out the best in each other through collaboration. Through our countless volunteer projects, we also help network with the communities around us, too. You can do amazing work here. Work you couldn't do anywhere else. It's up to you to make it happen.
Our team:
Bloomberg's Intelligent Automation team designs and delivers enterprise-grade automation solutions that complement human workflows and reduce manual, repetitive work across the business. In addition to building and maintaining a scalable digital workforce, we analyze complex processes, identify improvement opportunities through automation, and drive the implementation of high impact solutions in partnership with stakeholders. As part of our future roadmap, we are expanding into Agentic AI to develop autonomous systems capable of reasoning, decision-making, and human collaboration.
What's the role?
We are looking for a seasoned Senior RPA Developer to join our team and contribute to a broad automation ecosystem that includes RPA platforms (BluePrism/UiPath) and custom engineering-based automation solutions.
The role involves designing and building scalable automations, supporting production operations, and ensuring reliable post deployment monitoring and troubleshooting. You will collaborate with business partners, process analysts, and infrastructure and engineering teams, while maintaining automation reliability, resolving production incidents, and coordinating changes or support activities as needed.
We'll trust you to:
โ€ข Design, build, and support scalable automation solutions using BluePrism, UiPath and engineering based automations including APIs, Python, VBScript, JavaScript, TypeScript and system integrations and Agentic AI patterns
โ€ข Deliver end-to-end automations from design and development through testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support
โ€ข Define and apply automation best practices, standards, and design principles across RPA and non-RPA solutions
โ€ข Support production automations through monitoring, troubleshooting, exception handling, and performance optimization
โ€ข Manage automation execution, scheduling, and environment stability across platforms
โ€ข Integrate automations with AI agents, orchestration tools, and enterprise systems
โ€ข Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, process analysts, and engineering teams using agile delivery practices
โ€ข Monitor and measure automation performance, driving continuous improvement
โ€ข Thrive in a fast-paced environment with a hands-on, ownership-driven approach
You'll need to have:
โ€ข A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field
โ€ข 8+ years of experience in a business-facing IT, automation, or business/process analytics role
โ€ข 3+ years of hands-on BluePrism development and production support experience (preferred), with exposure to UiPath considered a plus
โ€ข Strong programming and scripting skills, including .NET/C#, SQL, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript and VBScript
โ€ข A passion for solving complex problems through automation, with a creative and continuous improvement mindset
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to design, develop, optimize, and integrate complex automation and analytics solutions at scale
โ€ข Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
โ€ข Excellent planning, organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
โ€ข High levels of self-direction and initiative, with a willingness to take end-to-end ownership of projects and deliverables
Nice to have skills:
โ€ข Experience with AI, machine learning, and cognitive automation technologies
โ€ข Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools, AI agents, and intelligent document processing (IDP)
โ€ข Experience working in a dynamic Agile/Scrum delivery environment
โ€ข Strong exposure to SAP ERP systems, including automating, integrating with, or supporting SAP-based business processes (highly desirable)
โ€ข Project management experience
We'd love to see:
โ€ข Strong technical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex automation, integration, and production issues
โ€ข A proactive mindset with curiosity to learn new domains and technologies
โ€ข Willingness to take end-to-end ownership of initiatives, from concept through delivery and support
โ€ข A hands-on, adaptable approach with strong accountability and follow-through
