Sleepaway Camp - Lifeguard/Activity Assistant
Are you passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth? Join our team at Camp Conowingo, a 600-acre sleepaway camp in Conowingo, Maryland, located along the Susquehanna River. Camp staff guide campers through activities, foster belonging, and build community while connecting with nature.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and support camp activities and special events while actively ensuring camper safety
  • Provide safety instruction and supervision for waterfront, archery, and ropes activities
  • Uphold Girl Scout safety standards, including required ratios during specialized activities
  • Assess camper and staff swim abilities at the start of each session
  • Maintain and care for archery, ropes, and waterfront equipment; report repairs as needed
  • Support daily camp operations, including opening/closing procedures and all-camp events
  • Adapt to changing situations with flexibility and a positive attitude
  • Promote the values and mission of Girl Scouts, including diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Participate in staff training, meetings, in-service opportunities, and post-camp clean-up

General Qualifications for All Camp Staff
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to thrive in a fast-paced camp environment
  • Able to work effectively with diverse groups of campers and adults
  • Team-oriented, able to take initiative, and follow direction as needed
  • Enthusiastic about the outdoors and comfortable living in a rustic setting

Time Commitment
  • Seasonal, live-on-site position
  • Includes paid staff training and camp clean-up
  • Two hours of scheduled time off daily and one day off per week
  • Appointment includes pre-camp training
  • One scheduled day off per week (typically Saturday)

Requirements
Skills, Education, and/or Relevant Experience
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Current Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront Module, or willingness to complete training during paid pre-camp training
  • Archery and Ropes certifications preferred (training provided if needed)
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with youth and adults
  • Physical stamina to work active, extended days in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to identify and respond quickly to safety hazards and emergencies
  • Preferred experience or certification in additional activities (ropes, archery, boating, etc.)
  • Must pass required background, fingerprint, and drug screenings

Compensation
$2,310 - $2,380 for 7 week camp season
