Job description

This Transportation Surveyor (TS) position is the entry, first working, or journey level of professional surveying office work at Caltrans. Under the supervision and direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the TS in the Right of Way (R/W) Engineering branch works mainly in an office setting performing a wide variety of office surveys tasks including, but not limited to the following: researching records; performing complex survey calculations; preparing various R/W and survey maps; preparing legal descriptions and deeds; providing information to the public; reducing and analyzing field data; occasionally functioning as a member of a field crew and performing other survey related work as required. The TS Range D, is in "responsible charge" of their work as defined in the Land Surveyor's Act, and may be called upon to act as a lead person in "responsible charge" of the technical work of other rank and file employees. As a Mapfiles Lead worker, the TS will be responsible for managing the mapfiles District 11 Intranet, updating District 11 right of way maps, archiving projects, adding data to the parcel fabric in District 11 Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and providing information to the public.

Working Conditions
Position located at 4050 Taylor Street, San Diego, San Diego County.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
The incumbent works in an air-conditioned office setting with artificial lighting and/or natural light; Duties may also require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time to perform the duties of the position. Duties may also require the incumbent to work overtime. The incumbent may occasionally be required to work outdoors, on uneven terrain and in various weather conditions. The incumbent may also be required to travel overnight on short-term assignments throughout the District or State for meetings, training or field/office assignments.
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications based on possession of an education, a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT), or Land Surveyor (LS) certificate must include a copy of your degree/transcripts, LSIT, or LS certificate along with your State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.

  • A Transportation Surveyor Range D must possess a valid California Land Surveyor's license issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, or a valid California Civil Engineer's license issued prior to 1982.
