What is a Rhino Design job?

A Rhino Design job involves using Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino), a computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create, model, and render 3D designs. Professionals in this role often work in industries like architecture, product design, jewelry, and automotive design. They create precise and complex models, optimize designs for production, and sometimes integrate with other software like Grasshopper for parametric modeling. Strong 3D modeling skills and an understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, or design aesthetics are often required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rhino Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Rhino Design role, you need strong 3D modeling skills, proficiency with CAD software—especially Rhinoceros (Rhino)—and a solid understanding of design principles, often supported by a degree in industrial, architectural, or product design. Familiarity with rendering plugins (such as V-Ray), Grasshopper for parametric design, and industry certifications like Rhino Specialist certification are highly beneficial. Creativity, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills, allowing successful collaboration with clients and team members. These skills ensure the delivery of effective, innovative, and technically-sound design solutions that meet project specifications and client expectations.

What types of projects or industries commonly employ Rhino Designers?

Rhino Designers work across a broad range of industries, including architecture, interior design, product design, jewelry, automotive, and even marine engineering. On a typical day, you might work on developing architectural facades, prototyping furniture, or creating intricate jewelry models—depending on your employer's focus. Collaboration with architects, engineers, manufacturers, or marketing teams is common, especially to ensure that digital designs translate smoothly into real-world production. This varied work environment allows you to gain experience on diverse teams and projects, supporting both creative growth and career advancement opportunities.

Job description

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

3D Product development position is responsible for taking initial design concepts from 2-dimensional sketches to 3-dimensional design. This includes developing a complete Rhino design file including all 3-dimensional surfaces, low level manufacturing feasibility, general fit correctness and maintaining the overall design feel and flow provided In the initial product sketch or technical drawing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Eyewear and other development projects work directly with head of the eyewear département.

· Responsible for taking all design concepts provided from the 2-dimesional or concept stage to a working 3-D Rhino file. This process is comprised mainly of evolving a 2D drawing into a 3D model without compromising the initial design concept as well as evolving the 2D concept into 3D model in the spirit of the initial design.

· Rough Design prototyping - Development of 3D printed or metal cast prototypes for designer approval.

· On the fly revisions to bring the idea to a final approved stage.

· Development of a detailed 2-dimensional drawing with all necessary profiles to concisely communicate the approved 3Dimentional design in a 2D format.

QUALIFICATIONS

· An ability to focus for long periods of time and a high level of attention to detail.

· Proficient with adobe Illustrator.

· Proficient in keyshots 3D rendering and animation software. Should be able to take a rhino design model and render all proposed materials to match existing and new colorways.

· Competent in taking 2-dimensional design concepts to a complex 3-dimensional model. Including evolving all radiuses and undeveloped or defined surfaces, developing manufacturable material thicknesses and low-level mechanical functionality and part connectivity.

· Competent with the 3D printing process including setting up models to print and evolving the printed part to a field test worthy piece.

· Competent in taking a 3-d Rhino file to a 2-dimensional cad drawing.

· Ability to learn and retain eyewear design concepts coming from the Head of the eyewear division.

· This is not a design position. However, it is an opportunity to, over a period of time, learn for the 30 years eyewear design experience that rests in the design team.
