What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Module Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Module Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in RF circuit design, electromagnetic theory, and a relevant engineering degree, such as electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with tools like ADS, HFSS, and network analyzers, plus knowledge of industry standards and certifications such as IPC, is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These competencies ensure the development of high-performance, reliable RF modules that meet stringent industry requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by RF Module Design Engineers during the product development cycle?

RF Module Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing interference and signal loss, ensuring compliance with international wireless standards, and integrating modules into compact device enclosures without sacrificing performance. Balancing trade-offs between power consumption, cost, and performance is also a frequent consideration. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as PCB layout engineers and system architects, is essential to address these challenges and deliver robust, manufacturable designs.

What does an RF Module Design Engineer do?

An RF Module Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and testing radio frequency (RF) modules used in a variety of wireless communication devices. They are responsible for creating circuit layouts, selecting components, and ensuring the modules meet performance, reliability, and regulatory standards. Their work often involves simulation, prototyping, and troubleshooting to optimize signal integrity and minimize interference. RF Module Design Engineers collaborate closely with hardware, software, and testing teams to integrate their modules into larger systems. This role is essential in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Rf Module Design Engineer vs RF System Engineer?

Overview

Job Title: Test Engineer

Job location: Williamsport, PA

Stellant is excited to offer an engineering technical support position at our Williamsport facility.  This role will support development, manufacturing and testing of Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) and Microwave Power Modules (MPMs) as a senior technical contributor.  Stellant' s industry leading space TWT & EPCs support spacecraft mission needs with over 4700 TWTs in orbit and 290 million operating hours.  Terrestrial TWTs and MPMs support critical applications for RF communications, electronic warfare (EW) and radar, producing ~2000 units a year.  In this role, you will support a multi-disciplinary group of engineers focusing on testing, station setup, programming and troubleshooting the above hardware. This role will also run technical investigations for production issues, support customer meetings and provide strategic guidance on a regular basis.

Responsibilities
  • Support production testing and equipment needs
  • Development of new test setups or testing processes
  • Automation of legacy and new test equipment
  • Coordinate with vendors for maintenance, upgrades and other outsourced needs
  • Troubleshoot equipment or manufacturing errors related to equipment
  • Observe, evaluate and troubleshoot existing production problems
  • Develop an overarching understanding of the testing equipment and processes that go into the vacuum hardware and RF / TWT / MPM / Klystron testing performed at Stellant
  • Work as a key member of a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop or troubleshoot new processes
  • Support capital equipment proposals and execution
  • Communicate effectively with vendors, customers, and other company personnel
Qualifications

At least nine years of relevant engineering or equivalent experience, with primary focus RF testing environments. At least 2 years of relevant engineering management experience.  An advanced degree in the field can be considered in lieu of on the job experience as well. Other qualifications that will enable you to perform successfully in this position include:

  • Experienced knowledge in RF testing equipment required
  • Experience with customer level reviews (like PDR, CDR, MRR, TRR ...) a plus
  • Experience supporting both production and development a plus
  • Programming knowledge helpful
  • Experience working with engineering drawings helpful
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment and with individuals from a variety of areas within the company (such as program managers, engineers from multiple disciplines, manufacturing and test personnel)
  • A bachelor's degree in physics, mathematics or an engineering discipline is required.
