Job description

Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer III in the Enterprise Engineering Division is responsible for executing and supporting the mechanical design, configuration, and documentation of low voltage products. This role works within established system architectures and engineering standards to develop custom and configured solutions that meet customer, manufacturing, and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and support the configuration and customization of mechanical designs to meet project- and customer-specific requirements.
  • Provide maintenance of line (MOL) support for operational teams across the business
  • Perform advanced 3D modeling and create detailed 2D drawings, including customer coordination drawings, fabrication drawings, and assembly documentation.
  • Maintain and update bills of materials (BOMs), ensuring alignment with released designs and manufacturing standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project managers, R&D engineering, manufacturing, manufacturing engineers and quality, to ensure designs meet functional, schedule, and cost targets.
  • Optimizing and configuring the custom designs of mechanical solutions to meet client-specific requirements, focusing on manufacturability and compliance with industry and internal standards.
  • Reviewing designs to maintain accuracy, quality, and compliance with industry guidelines, and UL 891/1558.
  • Incorporate manufacturing, testing, field, and installation feedback into design updates and product refinements.
  • Contribute to peer reviews of designs to ensure high-quality deliverables and compliance with engineering standards.
  • Assisting in identifying and addressing project challenges, ensuring alignment with timelines and client expectations.

Essential Functions

  • Apply established system-level configuration strategies and modules that balance technical requirements, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Translate product requirements into engineering system specifications and technical documentation
  • Support prototyping, testing, validation, and product launches of system configurations
  • Prepare high-quality documentation, including fabrication-level drawings and assembly instructions.
  • Design and refine mechanical components and assemblies
  • Identify and address discrepancies in BOMs promptly to minimize delays and errors during production.
  • Analyze field and quality data to drive product improvements
  • Contribute to workflow templating and automation initiatives to increase project throughput and reduce errors.
  • Provide informal guidance and technical support to junior engineers and designers
  • Share best practices related to 3D modeling, drafting standards, fabrication methods and documentation quality.
  • Participate in peer reviews to improve overall team output and consistency.
  • Work closely with the senior engineers, lead engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers and fabrication teams to refine designs for manufacturability.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders across engineering and manufacturing locations to support project execution.
  • Communicate design intent, assumptions, and changes clearly to relevant teams.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a configure-to-order (CTO) or engineered-product environment preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing and other related cross functional engagement is an asset.
  • Exposure to design-to-order or custom engineering environment is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with low or medium voltage switchgear, utility systems, or the power industry is preferred.
  • Proficiency in sheet metal design, including manufacturability and cost optimization.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Pro E; Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of UL891/1558 design guidelines and NFPA70E are desirable.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across teams.

Education & Experience

  • BSME or equivalent required, MSME is preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in CTO or system engineering.

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $91,200-$124,800 per year, based on location, experience, and qualifications.
