Job description

Job Description
The Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) within the Information and Communications Lab (ICL) is seeking an Electrical and Computer Engineering Intern starting Fall 2026.
Work with our research engineers to investigate, assess and develop adaptive wireless communications systems. Have you ever wanted to work in advanced wireless communications areas such as 5G, IoT, or Wi-Fi? Want to work with tactical radio and commercial systems? You will get to learn skills in these areas to propel your career forward. If you have a good handle on the basics of ECE and are good at learning new things, then you already have the basic knowledge to get started here. We train our students with a positive attitude and work ethic into full-time employees upon graduation.
Your tasks will include: The position will include some aspects of design/integration and some aspects of testing and assessment. Assist in testing and building software and hardware for 5G, embedded systems, servers and systems. Test and build solutions at application, network and/or physical layers. You will learn how to use RF test equipment, work with modern programming tools and applications, and interface with embedded software, systems and sensors. Other expectations include documentation and drawing support to effectively communicate your work and the team's work.
GTRI's Information and Communications Lab (ICL) Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) researches and develops military-grade wireless communications. ICL CSSD fuses multiple technologies including software-defined radio, FPGAs, 5G, circuit board design, 3D printing, and UAVs to solve our customer's most challenging problems.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Intern
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages (Python, Matlab, or C++ preferred)
  • Part-Time Intern- Must be registered for 6+ credit hours
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Knowledge of RF systems (modulation, test instruments, components such as filters and amplifiers)
  • Experience collecting and parsing data from system tests
  • Familiarity/experience with soldering
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas

Hours per Week
10-20 hours per week

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
