How much do rf embedded software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for rf embedded software engineer in Virginia is $152,068.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $130,400.00 and $171,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Embedded Software Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, RF design principles, digital signal processing, and a relevant degree such as electrical engineering or computer engineering. Familiarity with programming languages like C/C++, RF simulation tools (such as ADS or HFSS), and embedded development platforms is typically required, and certifications in wireless communications can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help professionals excel in complex project environments. These competencies are critical for designing reliable, high-performance RF systems that meet industry standards and operational requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by RF Embedded Software Engineers when integrating software with hardware components?

RF Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring reliable communication between software and RF hardware modules, particularly due to signal interference, timing constraints, and hardware-software compatibility issues. Debugging and testing in real-world environments can be complex, as subtle hardware anomalies may require close collaboration with hardware engineers for troubleshooting. Additionally, optimizing code for limited memory and processing power while maintaining low latency is a frequent challenge. Familiarity with embedded debugging tools and effective cross-disciplinary teamwork are essential for overcoming these hurdles.

What are RF Embedded Software Engineers?

RF Embedded Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and troubleshoot software that runs on embedded systems with a focus on radio frequency (RF) communications. They integrate hardware and software components to enable wireless communication in devices such as radios, IoT devices, and wireless sensors. Their work often involves programming microcontrollers, optimizing signal processing, and ensuring reliable data transmission. These engineers collaborate closely with hardware and RF design teams to deliver efficient and robust wireless solutions.

What is the difference between Rf Embedded Software Engineer vs Rf Firmware Engineer?

AspectRf Embedded Software EngineerRf Firmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; experience with embedded systemsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering; firmware development experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing embedded software for RF hardware in labs or office settingsWriting low-level firmware for RF devices, often in manufacturing or R&D labs
Industry UsageWireless communication, telecommunications, aerospaceWireless devices, RF modules, IoT products

Both roles focus on RF technology and embedded systems, but Rf Embedded Software Engineers typically develop higher-level embedded software, while Rf Firmware Engineers work on low-level firmware directly controlling RF hardware. The roles often overlap, but the main difference lies in the level of software abstraction and specific responsibilities.

Job description

About Us
Wave Central, now a Domo Broadcast Systems (DBS) company, creates professional, high-quality RF wireless video solutions for broadcasting, sports, entertainment, cinema, and other commercial applications.
Our customers rely on our broadcast solutions and technologies for world-class events including the NFL, World Rally, Formula E, Americas Cup and Eurovision. We are committed to providing superior quality goods, services and support to capture the moments that matter.
Our wireless transmission systems support our point-point ultra-low latency COFDM waveform and mesh TDMA protocol. All our products are engineered, hand-built, tested, and serviced in our Carlise, PA Office. We aim to provide the highest picture quality with the lowest latency possible. We strive to ensure our client's complete satisfaction with every system we deliver. It's the Wave guarantee.
What will you be doing?
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, we are looking for a highly skilled and hands-on Embedded Software Engineer to join our team. In this role, you'll serve as the technical leader driving system architecture, cross-disciplinary alignment, and the development of fully integrated digital hardware and embedded Linux systems.
As a core engineering leader, you'll guide digital hardware, Linux software, RF, networking, mechanical, and manufacturing efforts-while also contributing directly to design, debugging, and product realization. You'll collaborate with both local engineers and a distributed remote development team to bring Wave Central products from concept to production and beyond.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
  • Leading system architecture, interface definitions, and key design decisions across hardware and software
  • Coordinating multiple engineering disciplines while contributing hands-on to technical development
  • Translating high-level product requirements into detailed engineering specifications, tasks, and deliverables
  • Designing and validating digital hardware, including board bring-up, debugging, and system-level performance testing
  • Developing embedded Linux components such as kernel drivers, device trees, system services, and application-level features
  • Partnering with remote software teams for code reviews, CI workflows, and integration support
  • Guiding prototyping efforts, system validation, manufacturing transitions, and release processes
  • Troubleshooting complex field and production issues across hardware, software, RF, and networking layers
  • Providing technical support and documentation for Product Management, Sales Engineering, Operations, and QA
What makes a successful Embedded Software Engineer?
A successful Embedded Software Engineer is a technical leader who thrives at the intersection of hardware, software, and system-level design. They excel at unifying cross-functional engineering disciplines, driving coherent architecture, and solving complex problems spanning digital design, embedded Linux, RF, and networking.
We're looking for someone with:
  • Bachelor's (Required) or Master's (Desired) degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Experience designing and debugging digital hardware systems
  • Strong embedded Linux development experience (kernel, drivers, device trees, system services)
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate within distributed engineering teams
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python
  • Strong networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, multicast)
  • Expertise with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power measurement tools, and system-level debug workflows
  • Ability to work fluently across hardware, software, RF, and networking domains
Preferred:
  • Experience with video technologies (HEVC/H.264, MPEG-TS, SRT, RTP, GStreamer)
  • Familiarity with FPGA development (Verilog/VHDL)
  • Experience with Yocto, Buildroot, or custom Linux distributions
  • Exposure to RF systems, wireless protocols, or mesh networking
  • Experience supporting manufacturing test development and product release processes

Preferred location for this role is the New Jersey area; however, remote candidates will also be considered. The position requires the ability to travel to support customer engagements and business needs.
Benefits and Culture
Our culture is supportive and collaborative. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team where we share our ideas and innovation is strongly encouraged. We are looking for someone with genuine passion and a can-do attitude for what they do.
