JOB DESCRIPTION

Touch-Up / Rework Solder Technician

Job Summary

The Touch-Up / Rework Solder Technician is responsible for performing precision soldering, desoldering, and rework on printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic assemblies to correct defects identified during inspection or testing. This role ensures assemblies meet quality, reliability, and customer specifications while complying with industry standards such as IPC. The technician plays a critical role in reducing scrap, improving yield, and supporting continuous quality improvement efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform soldering, desoldering, and component replacement on PCBs and electronic assemblies
  • Rework through-hole, SMT, and fine-pitch components (including BGAs, QFNs, and connectors, as skill permits)
  • Correct defects such as solder bridges, insufficient solder, cold joints, lifted leads, and misalignment
  • Use soldering irons, hot air rework stations, heat plates, and related tools with precision
  • Interpret assembly drawings, schematics, work instructions, and applicable IPC standards
  • Inspect work using microscopes, magnifiers, and visual inspection tools
  • Ensure reworked assemblies meet IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and internal quality standards
  • Identify root causes of defects and communicate findings to engineering or quality teams
  • Accurately document rework performed, including defect type, corrective action, and materials used
  • Follow ESD, safety, cleanroom, and material handling procedures (including solder, flux, and chemicals)
  • Handle sensitive electronic components with care
  • Maintain soldering equipment and tools in good working order
  • Support continuous improvement and assist in training junior technicians as needed
  • 2+ years of hands-on soldering and electronic rework experience (manufacturing or repair environment preferred)
  • Experience working with SMT and through-hole assemblies
  • Proficient in hand soldering and desoldering techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, BOMs, assembly drawings, and work instructions
  • Familiarity with microscope-assisted soldering and fine-pitch components
  • Knowledge of ESD control practices
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Good communication skills with engineering, quality, and production teams
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and meet deadlines

Certifications (Preferred or Required, as applicable)

  • IPC-A-610 Certified or in process (Class 2 or Class 3 preferred)
  • J-STD-001 Certification
  • BGA or advanced rework certification (preferred but not required)
