Retrieval Augmented Generation information

What is a retrieval augmented generation?

A Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) job typically involves developing and optimizing AI systems that enhance text generation by incorporating external knowledge retrieved from relevant sources. Professionals in this field work on integrating retrieval mechanisms with large language models to improve the relevance, accuracy, and factual grounding of generated content. Common responsibilities include designing retrieval systems, fine-tuning language models, optimizing performance, and ensuring the seamless integration of factual data into AI-generated text. This role is highly interdisciplinary, involving expertise in natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and information retrieval.

What does a retrieval augmented generation engineer do?

A Retrieval Augmented Generation engineer typically spends their day designing and implementing systems that combine information retrieval with advanced generative models, such as large language models. This includes fine-tuning models, integrating external data sources, developing vector search pipelines, and evaluating output quality. Collaboration with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and product teams is common to ensure the solutions meet user requirements and scale effectively. Additionally, RAG engineers often troubleshoot issues, monitor model performance in production, and stay informed about the latest advancements in AI and information retrieval.

What skills and qualifications are needed for retrieval augmented generation?

To thrive in a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) engineering role, you need a solid background in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and experience with scalable information retrieval systems, typically supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, vector databases, and search platforms like Elasticsearch is essential, along with practical experience deploying and tuning RAG pipelines. Strong problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and effective communication abilities set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, implementing, and optimizing hybrid retrieval-generation AI systems that address complex, real-world information needs.

Job description

Are you looking for an opportunity to make an impact and shape the future of the commercial real estate (CRE) industry?
The Product Manager, AI will help shape and scale Berkadia's standalone AI application into an enterprise platform that enables business units to design, configure, and deploy secure, governed AI-enabled workflows.
This role will partner closely with business subject-matter experts, engineering, data, machine learning, and enterprise technology teams to translate business needs into scalable AI product capabilities. The Product Manager will help establish the reusable platform components, tools, workflows, guardrails, data-access patterns, and user experiences that empower business teams to self-serve within a controlled framework.
The ideal candidate combines strong product-management discipline with technical fluency in generative AI, large language models (LLMs), agentic systems, enterprise integrations, and software delivery. They can communicate effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders, understand the lifecycle of AI-enabled products, and guide the delivery of practical solutions that improve Berkadia's investment sales, mortgage banking, loan servicing, and corporate workflows.
Innovation meets excellence at Berkadia, where we give you the space you need to create and allow your ideas to flourish. We are leading the evolution of CRE, and can't do that without innovators who are driven by curiosity and are willing to challenge the status quo as they chart their career path - and Berkadia's future. Be Part of Building the Next. Be Berkadia.
We Innovate to shape the future of CRE, so in this role you will:
Responsibilities:
  • Champion and reinforce the vision, strategy, and roadmap, and operating model for an enterprise AI platform.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize business, technical, user, and operational inputs into clear product decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a software product in an enterprise environment from discovery through release and ongoing iteration.
  • Experience as a Product Manager for AI-enabled, generative AI, LLM-based, machine-learning, or agentic products.
  • Working knowledge of generative AI application patterns and secure enterprise integration, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, tool calling, workflow orchestration, model evaluation, agentic systems, APIs, tool frameworks, and governed access to enterprise data and systems.
  • Experience partnering with data scientists, machine-learning engineers, software engineers, solution architects, and business subject-matter experts.
  • Familiarity with both traditional machine-learning concepts and modern LLM-based product development is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of SDLC and Agile methodologies, including backlog management, iterative delivery, release planning, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment with ambiguity, competing priorities, and evolving AI technologies.
  • Strong written, verbal, facilitation, and stakeholder-management skills.

We Stand for Excellence, so to achieve success in this role you should have:
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of product-management experience, including responsibility for delivering software products in an enterprise environment.
  • 2+ years of experience working on AI-specific products or capabilities, such as generative AI applications, LLM-enabled products, AI agents, machine-learning products, or intelligent workflow automation.
  • Prior hands-on technical experience in software engineering, data, analytics, machine learning, AI application development, or a related technical field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with internal enterprise users and translating complex business processes into scalable digital-product experiences.
  • Experience supporting products that integrate with CRM, workflow, data, or other enterprise platforms is preferred.

We believe People Matter, so we offer benefits that go beyond:
  • Monthly paid volunteer hours and donation matching to benefit our communities
