Retrieval Augmented Generation information

What does a retrieval augmented generation engineer do?

A Retrieval Augmented Generation engineer typically spends their day designing and implementing systems that combine information retrieval with advanced generative models, such as large language models. This includes fine-tuning models, integrating external data sources, developing vector search pipelines, and evaluating output quality. Collaboration with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and product teams is common to ensure the solutions meet user requirements and scale effectively. Additionally, RAG engineers often troubleshoot issues, monitor model performance in production, and stay informed about the latest advancements in AI and information retrieval.

What is a retrieval augmented generation?

A Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) job typically involves developing and optimizing AI systems that enhance text generation by incorporating external knowledge retrieved from relevant sources. Professionals in this field work on integrating retrieval mechanisms with large language models to improve the relevance, accuracy, and factual grounding of generated content. Common responsibilities include designing retrieval systems, fine-tuning language models, optimizing performance, and ensuring the seamless integration of factual data into AI-generated text. This role is highly interdisciplinary, involving expertise in natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and information retrieval.

What skills and qualifications are needed for retrieval augmented generation?

To thrive in a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) engineering role, you need a solid background in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and experience with scalable information retrieval systems, typically supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, vector databases, and search platforms like Elasticsearch is essential, along with practical experience deploying and tuning RAG pipelines. Strong problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and effective communication abilities set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, implementing, and optimizing hybrid retrieval-generation AI systems that address complex, real-world information needs.

About the job:
As an AI Engineer, you will design, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications and services that drive innovation and efficiency. You will work closely with cross-functional teams-including software engineers, product managers, architects, and data teams-to build scalable AI solutions utilizing modern machine learning, generative AI, agent frameworks, and enterprise-grade software engineering practices.
In this role, you will combine strong software development principles with hands-on experience building, integrating, and operating AI solutions in production environments. You will take ownership of your projects from the initial design phase through to deployment and production support. Whether you are developing AI copilots, knowledge search platforms, document intelligence solutions, or agentic automation workflows, your work will directly improve developer and customer productivity while adhering to strict enterprise governance, security, and privacy requirements.
Responsibilities:
Design, develop, test, and deploy AI-enabled applications, APIs, microservices, and backend services to support complex AI workloads.
Build and integrate Generative AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs).
Develop AI agents, workflows, prompts, tools, and orchestration frameworks.
Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, and knowledge retrieval solutions.
Evaluate, benchmark, and optimize AI model performance, focusing on quality, cost, and latency.
Develop automated testing, monitoring, and observability for AI applications, and participate in production troubleshooting and incident resolution.
Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
Implement responsible AI practices, security, privacy, and governance controls across all AI solutions while contributing to architectural decisions and coding standards.
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
3 years of experience in software development.
2 years of experience building Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Generative AI applications.
Experience programming in one or more of the following languages: Python, Java, C#, or TypeScript/JavaScript.
Experience developing REST APIs and distributed services.
Experience working with cloud computing platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform) and software engineering fundamentals (e.g., design patterns, testing, CI/CD, security, and observability).
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with Large Language Model (LLM) platforms (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Azure OpenAI, Gemini).
Experience building AI agents, MCP-based integrations, tool-calling frameworks, and multi-agent workflows.
Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures, embeddings, and vector databases.
Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Cloud Run).
Familiarity with prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and working in Agile development environments.
Ability to independently deliver AI features while working under technical guidance from senior engineering leadership.
