What is retouching in photography?

Retouching in photography is the process of improving or altering an image after it has been taken, using software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. This can include removing blemishes, adjusting colors, smoothing skin, correcting exposure, and enhancing details to create a polished final image. Retouching is commonly used in fashion, portrait, and commercial photography to create visually appealing and professional-looking photos. While basic edits can be done quickly, advanced retouching requires skill and attention to detail to achieve natural-looking results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retoucher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retoucher, you need expertise in photo editing, color correction, and image manipulation, usually backed by experience in photography or graphic design. Mastery of technical tools like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and occasionally Capture One is essential, along with a portfolio demonstrating your capabilities. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help you interpret client briefs and produce visually compelling work. These skills ensure high-quality, market-ready images that meet client expectations and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by retouchers when working with high-volume projects, and how can they be managed?

Retouchers working on high-volume projects often face tight deadlines and repetitive tasks, which can lead to fatigue and decreased attention to detail. Managing these challenges involves developing efficient workflows, utilizing batch processing tools, and maintaining clear communication with photographers and creative teams about expectations and priorities. Staying organized and periodically reviewing work for consistency ensures high-quality results even under time pressure. Collaboration and feedback loops can also help identify and address any recurring issues early in the process.

What is the difference between Retouching vs Photo Editing?

AspectRetouchingPhoto Editing
Primary FocusRefining and enhancing images by removing imperfections, adjusting skin tones, and improving detailsAdjusting overall image elements like brightness, contrast, cropping, and color correction
Skills & ToolsAdvanced Photoshop techniques, skin smoothing, clone/stamp toolsBasic to intermediate editing software, Lightroom, Photoshop adjustments
Work EnvironmentCommercial, fashion, portrait photography post-productionGeneral photography, social media, marketing images

Retouching involves detailed enhancement and correction of images to achieve a polished look, often requiring advanced skills. Photo editing covers broader adjustments to improve overall image quality. While both roles use similar tools, retouching is more specialized in refining details, making it essential for high-end commercial and fashion work.

Job description

Edison, NJ | Hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote) | Full time, in house

About the job

We're looking for an In House Photographer to plan and shoot the product and lifestyle photography that shows up across our e-commerce marketplaces, including Amazon, Target, and TikTok Shop, as well as our website, social channels, and marketing campaigns.

You'll report to our Ecommerce and Marketing Manager, collaborate closely with our Senior Graphic Designer and Marketing team, and work out of our Edison, NJ office, with one remote day each week. This role carries real ownership of how our products and brand look in photos, not just the execution of a shot list handed to you.

We are a family owned business growing at an accelerated rate, and we're looking for someone who wants real ownership over their work. This is a chance to join a small team during a pivotal stretch of growth and help shape what SpaLife looks like in every photo we publish.

What you'll do

  • Conceptualize creative campaigns for our photography and visual contentPlan and shoot product and lifestyle photography for our e-commerce marketplaces, website, social channels, and marketing campaigns.
  • Work independently on location or in our studio, managing equipment, lighting, and shot lists with minimal supervision.
  • Edit and retouch your own photography, including color correction and retouching, delivering polished assets on deadline.
  • Apply AI assisted tools (such as Adobe Firefly) for image generation from scratch, upscaling, and retouching, while keeping full creative and quality control over the final product.
  • Be available for urgent photo requests from our ecommerce marketplaces, whether that means taking quick photos in our in house studio or generating the image with AI when that's the faster option.
  • Partner with the marketing team to translate creative briefs and campaign concepts into a visual shot plan.
  • Bring creativity to every shot list. No concept or angle is too unconventional, and we genuinely want outside the box thinking in day to day work.
  • Shoot and edit photo content for social platforms including Instagram and TikTok.
  • Collaborate with the social media manager to edit and elevate photo assets from our content library.
  • Stay current on product photography trends and platform best practices so our images stay relevant and engaging.
  • Build and maintain an organized library of raw and finished photography across everything you've shot, whether active or archived.
  • On occasion, manage shoot day logistics, including scheduling, location coordination, and communication with stakeholders before and during production.

What you'll bring

  • 2+ years of professional experience in photography.
  • A portfolio that shows range across product, lifestyle, and social photography.
  • A track record of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong retouching and post production skills, including proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
  • Hands on experience using AI tools in a photo workflow (such as Firefly) for image generation, AI assisted editing, upscaling, or generative retouching.
  • A professional eye for lighting, composition, and brand appropriate style.
  • Comfort managing multiple projects and deadlines at once in a fast paced environment.
  • Experience setting up lighting and camera equipment, including DSLRs.
  • An understanding of photo formats and trends across social platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
  • Familiarity with project management software (Monday.com a plus).

Nice to have

  • BS in Photography, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience in the beauty or CPG industry.
  • Videography and video editing skills.

How to apply

Please apply with a resume and a portfolio showing your range across product, lifestyle, and social photography. Applications without a portfolio link will not be considered.

Pay range: $65,000 to $85,000 annually, based on experience.
