What is a retirement advisor?

A Retirement Advisor is a financial professional who helps individuals plan for their retirement by providing advice on savings, investments, pensions, and income strategies. They assess a client's current financial situation, discuss retirement goals, and develop a personalized plan to achieve those goals while considering factors like taxes, healthcare, and inflation. Retirement Advisors may also assist with estate planning and Social Security optimization to ensure a comfortable and secure retirement.

How does a retirement advisor typically collaborate with other financial professionals to create comprehensive retirement plans for clients?

Retirement Advisors frequently work alongside accountants, estate planners, and investment managers to ensure clients receive well-rounded advice tailored to their unique financial situations. Collaboration is essential for addressing tax implications, legal considerations, and investment strategies within retirement planning. Advisors often participate in team meetings or coordinate directly with other professionals to align on goals and provide a seamless client experience. This teamwork not only enhances plan effectiveness but also helps Retirement Advisors stay informed about the latest industry trends and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retirement advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retirement Advisor, you need strong financial planning knowledge, analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field, often paired with certifications like CFP or RICP. Familiarity with financial planning software, retirement calculators, and CRM systems is essential for managing client portfolios and creating tailored retirement strategies. Excellent communication, active listening, and trust-building abilities are critical soft skills for understanding client goals and fostering long-term relationships. These skills and qualifications are vital to providing personalized advice, ensuring compliance, and helping clients achieve financial security in retirement.

What is the difference between Retirement Advisor vs Financial Planner?

CertificationsCertified Retirement Counselor (CRC), CFP often preferredCFP, ChFC, or other financial planning certifications

Financial Planners offer broader financial advice covering investments, estate planning, and taxes. The roles often overlap, but Retirement Advisors focus more on retirement-specific solutions.

How do I become a retirement advisor?

To become a retirement advisor, you typically need a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a related field, along with relevant certifications such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Gaining experience in financial planning or investment management and developing strong interpersonal skills are also important for success in this role.

How do retirement advisors get paid?

Retirement advisors typically earn fees through a combination of commissions on financial products they sell and ongoing management fees based on a percentage of clients' assets under management. Some advisors charge hourly or flat fees for specific services, and fee structures can vary depending on the advisor's business model and certifications such as CFP or CFA.

How much do retirement advisors make?

Retirement advisors typically earn a median annual salary of around $65,000 to $85,000, with experienced professionals and those in senior roles earning over $100,000. Compensation can vary based on location, certifications, client base, and whether they work independently or for a firm.

Job description

Associate Financial Advisor | Retirement Planning

Summit Wealth Strategies is seeking an experienced, fully licensed Associate Financial Advisor to join our growing retirement planning team.

This role is designed for an advisor who enjoys financial planning, working directly with clients, and being part of a structured advisory processโ€”but does not want to spend their career prospecting, cold calling, or building a book of business from scratch.

Our firm generates the prospects. Your focus is helping deliver an exceptional planning and client experience.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead initial prospect meetings to understand the clientโ€™s financial situation, retirement goals, income needs, concerns, and priorities
  • Work alongside our Lead Advisor to develop comprehensive retirement income strategies
  • Attend strategy and recommendation meetings and help guide prospects through the planning process
  • Take ownership of the relationship once a prospect becomes a client
  • Lead implementation and onboarding of new clients
  • Conduct ongoing client review meetings and serve as a primary relationship manager
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing financial plans, investments, income strategies, Social Security, taxes, and other retirement considerations
  • Coordinate with our operations team on account openings, transfers, paperwork, and client service
  • Maintain accurate client information, tasks, and workflows within Salesforce
  • Provide proactive communication and high-level service to existing clients

Who Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in wealth management, financial planning, or investment advisory
  • FINRA Series 7, Series 63 & 65 (or Series 66)
  • Life, Health & Disability Insurance License
  • Strong understanding of investments and retirement planning
  • CFPยฎ, RICPยฎ, or progress toward an advanced planning designation preferred
  • Comfortable leading client meetings and discussing complex financial concepts in a clear, understandable way
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple client relationships and priorities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with a high standard for follow-through
  • Comfortable working within a team-based advisory model
  • Interested in developing into a high-level retirement advisor rather than primarily focusing on business development

About Summit Wealth Strategies

Summit Wealth Strategies is a retirement-focused wealth management firm serving clients across the country. We specialize in helping individuals and families approaching or living in retirement create coordinated strategies around investments, retirement income, Social Security, taxes, and long-term financial planning.

Our advisory process is built around specialization and teamwork. Rather than requiring every advisor to prospect, plan, close, implement, and service clients independently, our team works together to deliver a consistent, high-quality client experience.

This is an opportunity to join a growing firm, work with established client relationships and qualified prospective clients, and develop into a key advisor within the organization.
