Job description

Security Officer

West Hartford Public Schools is seeking to fill a full-time position for a Security Officer at Charter Oak International Academy, Smith STEM School, and Whiting Lane Elementary School. The security officer reports to the Director of Safety & Security and School Administration. The security officer's primary responsibility is to provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students while on school grounds: monitoring personnel and/or visitors; communicating information in response to inquiries; and enforcing the school and district rules, regulations and policies pertaining to student academic behavior and well-being.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Building positive relationships with students, staff, and visitors to ensure safety and a productive learning environment.
  • Communicating safety and security policies and enforcement procedures for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  • Monitoring student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. cafeteria, classrooms with substitutes, open areas, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and securing a facility.
  • Patrolling school and school facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility and maintaining security.
  • Preparing written materials for the purpose of documenting student behavior activities, providing written reference of activities, and/or conveying information.
  • Providing traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.
  • Referring incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, violations of rules, etc. to appropriate site personnel for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
  • Responding to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Participating in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Ability to apply best practices and principles for security, emergency management, law enforcement, safety, and loss prevention.
  • Ability to understand laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols governing actions on district's property.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with the public, employees, school administrators, and the West Hartford Police Department and/or other law enforcement agencies.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment in risk-related matters.
  • Ability to understand Operations Planning, Disaster Recovery, Emergency Response, and Crisis Management.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Must possess a high school diploma; completion of college-level courses in the area of security, emergency management, or criminal justice preferred.
  • Retired law enforcement having retired in good standing preferred.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful experience working with students preferred.
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Basic Life Support preferred.
