What is a retail sales consignment associate?

Retail Sales Consignment Associates are professionals who manage the sale of goods on consignment in retail settings. They handle items that are provided by consignors (individuals or businesses) to be sold in a store, taking care of inventory, pricing, customer service, and ensuring that sales are accurately recorded so consignors receive their share of the proceeds. These associates often evaluate merchandise, maintain displays, and facilitate smooth transactions between the consignor, the store, and the customer. Their role is crucial in maximizing sales while maintaining positive relationships with both consignors and shoppers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail sales consignment associate?

A Retail Sales Consignment Associate should possess strong customer service abilities, basic sales skills, and familiarity with inventory or point-of-sale systems, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with consignment software, barcode scanners, and cash register systems is typically valuable. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and an approachable demeanor help associates build trust and ensure customer satisfaction. These skills are crucial for maintaining efficient store operations, maximizing sales, and creating a positive shopping experience for both consignors and buyers.

What are some common challenges faced by retail sales consignment associates, and how can they be managed effectively?

Retail Sales Consignment Associates often navigate the challenge of balancing inventory from multiple consignors while ensuring accurate product tracking and timely payouts. Managing customer expectations regarding item pricing and consignment terms can also be complex. To succeed, associates benefit from strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and clear communication with both consignors and shoppers. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems and proactive problem-solving can help streamline operations and create a positive experience for all parties involved.

Job description

Job Title: Full-Time Sales Associate / Team Member – Consignment Store
Location: San Rafael, CA
Occasional shifts: San Francisco showroom
About Us
Join a well-established, design-forward consignment showroom where every day is different, every piece tells a story, and your eye for style actually matters.
If you love interiors, enjoy working with people, and want to build a long-term career in a creative retail environment, this could be the perfect fit.
We specialize in high-quality furniture and home décor, with a strong focus on sustainability and thoughtful design. We’re proud to be a locally loved business with over 15 years of success—and a team where many members have stayed and grown with us for over a decade. This isn’t a revolving-door retail job; it’s a place to build a career.
Position Overview
We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented full-time team member to join our San Rafael location. This role blends customer service, inventory management, and hands-on work with furniture.
You’ll be part of a collaborative team that values presentation, organization, and creating an exceptional customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service and assist clients with purchases
  • Curate and stage the showroom floor to create inspiring, ever-changing displays
  • Lift, move, and arrange furniture throughout the showroom
  • Assist with inventorying and processing incoming consignment pieces
  • Photograph and showcase unique pieces for our online audience using Mac computers
  • Create and manage online listings for merchandise
  • Maintain organization of showroom and storage areas
  • Support daily store operations
  • Occasionally work shifts at our San Francisco showroom
You Might Be a Great Fit If You:
  • Have an eye for design, interiors, or aesthetics
  • Enjoy staying active and working with your hands
  • Like a mix of customer interaction and behind-the-scenes tasks
  • Take pride in keeping spaces organized and visually appealing
  • Are looking for a stable, long-term role—not just a temporary job
  • Bring a positive, flexible attitude and enjoy working as part of a team
Qualifications
  • Ability to lift and carry furniture (required)
  • Comfortable using Apple/Mac computers
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Friendly, professional, and customer-focused
  • Retail or consignment experience is a plus (not required)
Schedule & Compensation
  • Full-time position
  • Store is open 7 days a week — must have flexible availability, including weekends
  • Starting at $22–$24/hour + welcome bonus + performance-based raises
  • Additional individual and team bonuses offered throughout the year
Benefits
Health benefits available
401(k) with employer match
Gym or yoga studio membership support
Daily allowance for commuting employees
Opportunities for growth and advancement
After 1 year: 1 week of paid vacation
Birthday and anniversary gifts plus bonuses
Substantial employee discounts on store purchases
