What is a retail associate?

Retail Associates are employees who work in retail stores to assist customers, manage merchandise, and ensure a positive shopping experience. Their responsibilities may include greeting customers, answering questions, stocking shelves, operating cash registers, and maintaining store cleanliness. Retail Associates play a key role in providing customer service and supporting the overall operations of the store. They often work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate store needs. Strong communication skills and a friendly attitude are important for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Associate, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, and mobile payment technologies is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and a positive attitude help you engage customers and handle challenging situations effectively. These skills ensure a smooth shopping experience, drive sales, and contribute to overall store success.

What are some common challenges retail associates face during busy seasons, and how can they effectively manage them?

During busy seasons, Retail Associates often face high customer volumes, increased restocking demands, and frequent multitasking. Managing these challenges involves maintaining a positive attitude, staying organized, and communicating clearly with both team members and customers. Effective Associates prioritize tasks, use downtime wisely to prepare for rush periods, and aren't afraid to ask for help when needed. Building strong teamwork and staying flexible are key to ensuring smooth operations during peak times.

We offer one of the best compensation packages in the industry: competitive hourly pay, tips that can exceed $80 per shift for top performers, and the largest employee cannabis discount you'll find anywhere.

What You'll Do

Customer Service & Sales

  • Greet every customer warmly and professionally; build rapport and promote return visits
  • Provide expert guidance on product selection based on individual needs, preferences, and Oregon regulations
  • Educate customers on strain types, cannabinoid profiles, consumption methods, dosage, and product effects
  • Promote loyalty programs, daily deals, and new product launches
  • Verify valid ID and confirm all eligibility requirements before every transaction

  • Accurately process transactions through POS and seed-to-sale tracking systems
  • Handle all financial transactions with integrity and accuracy
  • Follow all transaction limits, discounts, and promotional pricing protocols
  • Adhere to all Oregon cannabis laws and internal SOPs including ID verification, purchase limits, packaging, and labeling
  • Report discrepancies, compliance concerns, or suspicious activity to store leadership

  • Maintain merchandising standards - displays should be neat, full, and visually appealing at all times
  • Verify accurate labeling and pricing on all retail products
  • Support cycle counts and inventory audits as needed
  • Keep the sales floor, waiting area, restrooms, and break room clean and organized
  • Sanitize high-touch areas and workstations regularly
  • Follow all store opening, closing, and cash-handling procedures

Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1+ year of customer service, hospitality, or retail experience; cannabis experience not required
  • Strong interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Basic math and computer skills; POS experience a plus
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly (up to 200 lbs with assistance), with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Must meet all Oregon state requirements for employment in a licensed cannabis facility

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting at $15.00/hr plus tips - top performers earn $80 or more in tips per shift
  • 50% employee discount on smokable cannabis products

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance - both high-deductible and low-deductible plan options available
  • 401(k)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Paid Sick Leave (PSL)
  • Holiday pay for shifts worked on: New Year's Day, 4/20, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
