Summary
Salary: $22.00 hourly
The Assistant Trail Boss assists in supervising student crews engaged in outdoor trail maintenance projects.
Performs physically demanding field work while ensuring student safety, work quality, and compliance with District and site regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervises and guides a crew of students during outdoor work activities.
  • Transports students to and from project sites using District vehicles.
  • Participates directly in trail maintenance and related manual labor.
  • Performs moderate to strenuous trail maintenance work.
  • Uses hand and power tools safely.
  • Navigates uneven, rocky, and/or slippery terrain.
  • Hikes daily carrying a backpack with supplies.
  • Maintains punctual daily reporting and follows safety protocols.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
  • Operate equipment used in trail maintenance, adhere to safety practices, and plan/manage trail projects.
  • Knowledge of basic outdoor safety protocols.
  • Facilitate group discussions.
  • Solve practical problems.

Abilities
  • Consider a variety of factors when using equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances.
  • Utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes.
  • Work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Identify issues and create action plans.
  • Adhere to appropriate safety practices.
  • Ability to hike 3-5 miles per day over uneven terrain with approximately 10 lbs. carried.
  • Work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods.

  • Work outdoors in variable weather and environmental conditions.

Supplemental Information
Education and Experience
One year of trail maintenance experience and/or a related field that provides experience with trail maintenance equipment (e.g., chainsaws, hedge trimmers, pickaxes).
Licenses and Certificates
May require a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may require exposure to dirt, dust, uneven terrain, and outdoor elements. Moderate to strenuous physical exertion required.
