What is a restorative justice counselor?

Restorative Justice Counselors are professionals who facilitate processes to resolve conflicts and repair harm by bringing together those affected by wrongdoing—such as victims, offenders, and community members. They focus on open dialogue, accountability, and healing, rather than solely on punishment. These counselors work in schools, community organizations, and justice systems to help individuals understand the impact of their actions and restore relationships. Their goal is to foster understanding, empathy, and lasting solutions that benefit all parties involved.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a restorative justice counselor?

To thrive as a Restorative Justice Counselor, you need a solid background in conflict resolution, psychology, and counseling, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree. Familiarity with mediation platforms, case management software, and restorative justice frameworks is typically required. Exceptional active listening, cultural competence, and facilitation skills help build trust and foster open dialogue among diverse participants. These abilities are crucial for effectively addressing harm, rebuilding relationships, and supporting positive outcomes within communities or institutions.

What are common challenges faced by restorative justice counselors, and how are they typically addressed?

Restorative Justice Counselors often navigate emotionally charged situations, working with individuals who may be resistant to dialogue or reconciliation. Building trust among participants and maintaining neutrality can be challenging, especially when conflicts are deeply rooted. Counselors typically address these challenges by employing active listening, trauma-informed approaches, and by facilitating structured, safe environments for communication. Ongoing training, peer support, and supervision are also important tools for managing the emotional demands of the role.
