What is a resource energy professional?

Resource Energy professionals are specialists who focus on the management, conservation, and efficient use of energy resources such as electricity, natural gas, oil, and renewable sources. They may work in roles related to energy procurement, energy efficiency consulting, sustainability planning, or resource management for organizations and governments. Their main goal is to optimize energy usage, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impacts by implementing energy-saving strategies and technologies. They also help organizations comply with energy regulations and track energy consumption data. Resource Energy professionals often collaborate with engineers, facility managers, and sustainability teams to achieve these objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a resource energy manager?

To thrive as a Resource Energy Manager, you need a solid background in energy management, environmental science, or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager). Familiarity with energy management systems, data analysis tools, and sustainability reporting software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and effective communication skills allow you to develop and implement energy-saving initiatives successfully. These skills are crucial for optimizing resource use, reducing costs, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in resource energy roles, and how can they overcome them?

Professionals in resource energy roles often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing regulations, managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, and staying updated with technological advancements in sustainable energy. Overcoming these challenges requires strong communication skills, continuous professional development, and a proactive approach to regulatory compliance. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and investing in ongoing training can help professionals stay ahead and effectively contribute to their organization's energy goals.

About the Roleย

NRG is seeking a Manager to join its Growth & Partnerships organization. This role is ideal for an intellectually curious and analytically rigorous energy industry professional who enjoys solving complex problems at the intersection of power markets, customer solutions, regulation, and corporate growth.ย

The successful candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong business judgment. They will be comfortable reviewing utility tariffs, interpreting RTO/ISO market rules, auditing complex financial models, developing data-driven insights, and partnering across commercial, regulatory, finance, operations, and development teams to advance strategic initiatives.ย

This position will support high-priority growth opportunities across NRG's portfolio, including data centers, distributed energy resources, virtual power plants, load management solutions, generation development, and utility partnerships.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of energy market opportunities, regulatory developments, customer segments, and emerging business models.ย
  • Review, interpret, and synthesize utility tariffs, regulatory orders, RTO/ISO market rules, interconnection requirements, and procurement mechanisms.ย
  • Build, audit, and enhance complex financial, operational, and economic models to evaluate business opportunities and investment decisions.ย
  • Translate complex technical information into clear business implications, risks, decision points, and recommended actions.ย
  • Collaborate with partner teams across the enterprise to evaluate and advance growth opportunities.ย
  • Identify key assumptions, risks, constraints, and value drivers across potential partnerships, investments, and new business ventures.ย
  • Conduct market intelligence, competitive assessments, and benchmarking to inform strategic decision-making.ย
  • Develop executive-ready presentations, business cases, and decision-support materials for senior leadership.ย
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner to internal stakeholders and help bridge organizational boundaries to advance enterprise priorities.ย

What We Are Looking Forย

  • Deeply knowledgeable about the North American energy industry, wholesale power markets, utility business models, and customer energy solutions.ย
  • Comfortable navigating complex and ambiguous problems where there may be limited precedent or incomplete information.ย
  • Strong analytical thinkers who can independently develop insights, test assumptions, and identify the business implications of technical details.ย
  • Exceptional spreadsheet users who can quickly identify errors, challenge assumptions, improve analytical rigor, and audit complex models.ย
  • Skilled at interpreting technical, regulatory, commercial, and financial information and connecting it to practical business outcomes.ย
  • Natural bridge-builders who enjoy collaborating across diverse functions, perspectives, and operating teams.ย
  • Creative problem solvers who challenge conventional thinking, look around corners, and uncover pragmatic ways to move opportunities forward.ย
  • Strong communicators who can explain complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.ย

Preferred Experienceย

  • 5-10+ years of experience in energy markets, utilities, retail energy, power development, consulting, trading, regulatory affairs, energy analytics, project finance, or a related field.ย
  • Experience working with or analyzing ISOs/RTOs such as ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, NYISO, or similar wholesale market structures.ย
  • Familiarity with utility tariffs, interconnection processes, transmission planning, capacity markets, demand response, DERs, virtual power plants, or power generation economics.ย
  • Advanced Excel modeling capabilities, including comfort reviewing and improving detailed financial, operational, or market models.ย
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Energy Systems, Public Policy, or a related discipline.ย
  • MBA, master's degree, or other advanced degree preferred but not required.ย

Success in This Roleย

  • Rapidly understand technical energy market, tariff, regulatory, and commercial issues.ย
  • Produce high-quality analytical work with strong attention to detail and limited supervision.ย
  • Influence outcomes through facts, relationships, credibility, and clear communication.ย
  • Translate complex industry dynamics into actionable business recommendations.ย
  • Help NRG identify, evaluate, and execute growth opportunities that create long-term enterprise value.ย
