Reservoir Engineer Intern information

What does a reservoir engineer intern do?

A Reservoir Engineer Intern assists in evaluating and optimizing the extraction of oil and gas from underground reservoirs. Their tasks often include analyzing geological data, running simulation models, and supporting senior engineers in developing production strategies. Interns may also help prepare technical reports, monitor reservoir performance, and recommend methods to improve recovery. This role provides hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools, making it a valuable learning opportunity for students pursuing a career in petroleum engineering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a reservoir engineer intern?

To thrive as a Reservoir Engineer Intern, you typically need a background in petroleum engineering or a related field, strong analytical skills, and a solid grasp of reservoir engineering principles. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Petrel, Eclipse, or CMG, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns excel in team environments and convey technical findings. These skills and qualities are essential for accurately evaluating reservoir performance and contributing valuable insights to maximize hydrocarbon recovery.

What projects and responsibilities can a reservoir engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Reservoir Engineer Intern, you can expect to support senior engineers in analyzing reservoir performance, building simulation models, and assisting with data collection and interpretation. Interns often work on real-world projects, such as evaluating well productivity, estimating reserves, and optimizing recovery methods. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including geologists, production engineers, and data analysts—is common, providing valuable exposure to the integrated workflow of petroleum engineering. This hands-on experience gives interns a practical understanding of industry tools and prepares them for future roles in reservoir management.

What is the difference between Reservoir Engineer Intern vs Reservoir Engineer?
