Job description

The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Research Assistant in the Thiel and Byrne Labs. The Research Assistant will conduct research in gynecologic oncology, provide training in patient-derived organoid methodology and perform administrative tasks under the supervision of Dr. Kristina Thiel and Dr. James Byrne. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for overseeing lab safety and working with environmental health and safety. Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills are necessary. The Thiel and Byrne labs provide an energetic, welcoming, and supportive environment for scientists and staff working toward common goals.

Position Responsibilities:

Research (60%)
o    Conduct research in gynecologic cancer using cell lines and patient-derived models (organoids, xenografts) 
o    Provide training in organoid culture methodology based upon protocols developed by the Thiel lab
o    Collect, process and store human and animal specimens
o    As skills develop troubleshoot, analyze and propose modifications to protocols; perform complex techniques per protocol; test and evaluate current       procedures; develop and implement procedures for monitoring data integrity; may present results at team meetings.


Administrative responsibilities (40%)
o    Assist with procurement of lab supplies and materials; initiate purchasing requests; monitor accounts/expenditures
o    Work with environmental health and safety to maintain compliance and a safe lab environment; document compliance with safety and regulatory           guidelines
o    Provide oversight of lab equipment; assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
o    Assist with IACUC or similar protocol submissions
o    Assist with Material Transfer Agreements or similar agreements
o    Maintain laboratory website
 

Required Qualifications:

   A Bachelor's Degree in Biology or an associated field, or equivalent combination of education and experience

    Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in written and spoken English
    Strong organizational skills
    Sound independent judgment and competence in research methodologies
    Strong analytical and computer skills required; proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
    Ability to prioritize tasks and meet established project timelines
    Ability to work independently and within a team environment
    Ability to interact effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and fields of expertise
    Ability to demonstrate professionalism
    Careful attention to detail

Desired Qualifications:

    Experience with mammalian cell culture and/or organoid culture
    Experience with animal handling and husbandry
