What does a research scientist in optimization do?

A Research Scientist in Optimization specializes in developing and applying mathematical techniques to improve processes, systems, or algorithms. Their work often involves formulating optimization problems, designing solutions, and collaborating with engineers or data scientists to implement and test their models. These scientists may work in various industries, such as technology, logistics, finance, or manufacturing, to help organizations make better decisions, save resources, or improve performance. Their daily tasks include conducting experiments, analyzing large datasets, and publishing findings in scientific journals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research scientist in optimization?

To excel as a Research Scientist in Optimization, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and optimization theory, often supported by a PhD in a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, optimization libraries (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX), and experience with data analysis tools are typically required. Critical thinking, creativity, and strong communication skills help in formulating novel approaches and presenting complex findings clearly. These skills drive the development of efficient algorithms and solutions, advancing research impact and innovation in the field.

What types of projects and collaborations can a research scientist in optimization expect to be involved in?

As a Research Scientist specializing in Optimization, you can expect to work on projects that involve developing and improving algorithms to solve complex real-world problems in areas such as logistics, supply chain, or machine learning. Collaboration is common, often involving cross-functional teams with data scientists, software engineers, and domain experts to implement and test optimization solutions. You may also contribute to academic publications, attend conferences, and sometimes mentor junior researchers, all while staying current with the latest advancements in optimization techniques.

What is the difference between Research Scientist Optimization vs Data Scientist?

AspectResearch Scientist OptimizationData Scientist
Required CredentialsMaster's or PhD in Operations Research, Mathematics, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Statistics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, academiaBusiness analytics, tech companies, consulting firms
Industry UsageOptimization problems, algorithm development, mathematical modelingData analysis, predictive modeling, data visualization

Research Scientist Optimization focuses on developing mathematical models and algorithms to solve complex optimization problems, often in research or academic settings. Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights and build predictive models for business decisions. While both roles require strong analytical skills, Research Scientist Optimization emphasizes mathematical and algorithmic development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and interpretation.

Job Summary:

ย

As a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Zymo Research, you will develop innovative infectious disease molecular assays from concept to completion, advancing Zymo's infectious disease product portfolio. You will conceptualize, design, perform, and optimize laboratory experiments supporting PCR- and NGS-based assay development, and contribute to related activities such as business development, marketing, product development, and networking, as needed.

As a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Zymo Research, you will lead and/or collaborate with a talented, multidisciplinary team of scientists and researchers developing tools that shape the biomedical industry, innovating, developing, and delivering PCR- and NGS-based infectious disease assays from early development through real-world application. As a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist, you will contribute to Zymo's strategic planning and be encouraged to explore new ideas as we navigate this highly competitive field. Zymo Research offers tremendous room for growth as we continue to explore new directions and expand.

Join us in making a meaningful impact!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ย

  • Design, execute, analyze, interpret, and troubleshoot experiments supporting infectious disease assay development.
  • Design and optimize PCR primers/probes and NGS-based workflows for sensitive, specific detection of infectious agents.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate assays and workflows end-to-end, including sample preparation and nucleic acid extraction.
  • Stay current with scientific literature and emerging technologies in infectious disease diagnostics to inform assay design and troubleshooting.
  • Effectively communicate results, contribute original ideas, and help plan future project directions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, marketing, commercialization, and business development, to advance projects and support technology transfer.
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with outside scientists and key opinion leaders relevant to projects.
  • Maintain accurate, complete documentation of experiments and results in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
  • Author technical reports, white papers, scientific publications, and conference presentations to communicate findings internally and externally.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor junior employees.

Education and Experience:

ย

  • Requires a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, microbiology, or a related field, with at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Strong background in molecular biology, with hands-on experience designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting PCR-based assays, including primer/probe design. NGS-based assay development and data analysis experience is a plus.
  • Experience in infectious disease, virology, microbiomics, or microbiology preferred, but not required.
  • Candidate should have good knowledge of both basic and the latest nucleic acid analysis methodologies, including PCR, qPCR, multiplex PCR, and NGS.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and NGS data analysis pipelines is a plus.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across diverse teams; open, customer-focused communication style.
