Position Summary:
The Lab Manager - Youth Rising Lab in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Rice University (http://psychology.rice.edu) oversees the daily operations of a large and active psychological laboratory. In addition to managing day-to-day lab operations, responsibilities for the position include coordinating community-based research activities, managing and training lab personnel, and providing assistance with the dissemination of research findings. This work supports the research mission of the university by increasing the quantity and quality of work conducted in the laboratory, as well as the educational mission of the university by providing high-quality training and oversight of undergraduate students participating in the laboratory as a research experience.

Workplace Requirements:
In-person position: This position is exclusively on-site, requiring all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change. Primarily an indoor work environment that requires working at a computer for extended periods (up to eight hours per day).

Hiring Salary: $53,000 annually

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a related discipline

  • 1+ years of research experience in a clinical or developmental psychology lab

    • In lieu of the education and experience requirement, additional education and/or experience above and beyond what is required may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including efficiency in email correspondence

  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., SPSS and/or R)

  • Experience with office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Working knowledge of image and/or video design and editing (e.g., Photoshop, Canva)

  • Commitment to supporting a collaborative team environment

  • Commitment to working with youth and families of color and the ability to engage effectively with individuals exposed to trauma

  • Commitment to supporting an equitable and inclusive work climate

Preferences:

  • 2+ years of research experience in a clinical or developmental psychology lab

  • Master's degree in social sciences, including sociology, geography, statistics, political science, public policy, as well as data science, computer science, computational science, and/or another related field

Essential Functions:

  • Plans lab events and meetings

  • Develops and updates lab operating procedures

  • Manages budgeting and financial oversight of grants and research accounts (provides monthly spending reports)

  • Purchases and maintains inventory of lab equipment

  • Manages IRB protocols for lab research projects

  • Manages the lab website

  • Manages the lab's social media outreach

  • Assists in designing and planning research studies

  • Coordinates and monitors recruitment and scheduling of participants

  • Communicates with research partners, including community-based agencies and school staff

  • Communicates with community advisory boards

  • Develops and manages research participant databases

  • Coordinates with graduate research assistants and postdoctoral research associates

  • Hires, coordinates, trains, evaluates, and works with undergraduate and postbaccalaureate research assistants

  • Coordinates, trains, and works with community-based research staff

  • Provides assistance with data analysis, conference presentations, and scientific manuscripts
