About this Position

About Us: Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering is a unique department shared between two colleges, Ferguson College of Agriculture and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. Position Details: This is full-time professional position will provide oversight and management for a suite of research and analytical laboratories supporting BAE faculty research and Extension programs. The candidate will be responsible for managing operations of the departmentโ€™s analytical and wet-lab research facilities. Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting faculty with operational oversight of wet laboratories plus daily management of the Bioenergy Laboratory facility and activities at the BAE West and Annex building; developing laboratory usage policies; helping coordinate space for laboratory users; working with PIs, department head and outside sources to efficiently utilize available funding to support lab faciltiies and resources; researching and recommending equipment purchases; maintaining analytical equipment and working with service professionals on operational maintenance and repairs.ย  As appropriate, it will be important for this individual to identify opportunities to enhance operations and procedures that increase productivity and efficiency.ย ย 

In addition, the research lab manager is expected to promote and administer the department's safety and training program, including offering training sessions.ย  Related responsibilities also include assisting PIs and students with maintaining chemical and gas cylinder inventory for departmental labs, SDS sheet inventory and records for asset management; and ensuring laboratories are in compliance with university laboratory safety policies, as well as OSHA and EPA.

It is also expected that the selected candidate assist employees and students with laboratory operations, including establishing work schedules, delegating work assignments and assisting in evaluating staff and student performances; actively contribute to developing research activities by assisting in the design and implementation of experiments; provide technical advice and assistance to researchers; help identify alternative resources and facilities to ensure completion of work as needed.

It is anticipated that our new Research Lab Manager will be integral to helping us foster and support a strong safety and wellness culture.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Engineering or related field
    (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • At least 5 years of experience in a research, analytical and/or clinical laboratory setting; working knowledge of standard laboratory procedures, chemicals and potential hazards, and working familiarity with operation and maintenance of wide range of analytical laboratory equipment.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Driverโ€™s License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Engineering or related field
  • In addition to the required laboratory experience, two years of management experience.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Experience with use of HPLC, GC and LC/MS analytical equipment. Use of ozone and UV treatment technologies. Familiarity with fermentation/cell culture reactor systems. Experience with chemical and biochemical extraction and separation methods.
