Research Informatics Analyst information

What is a research informatics analyst?

A Research Informatics Analyst is a professional who supports research teams by managing, analyzing, and interpreting complex data sets, often in scientific, clinical, or academic environments. They develop and maintain databases, create data visualizations, and ensure data quality and integrity. Their work enables researchers to make data-driven decisions and helps optimize research workflows. Research Informatics Analysts often collaborate with scientists, IT staff, and other analysts to solve data-related challenges and support ongoing research projects.

How does a research informatics analyst typically collaborate with researchers and IT teams on data-driven projects?

Research Informatics Analysts play a crucial liaison role between scientific researchers and IT professionals. They work closely with researchers to understand project requirements, ensuring that data management solutions align with scientific goals. At the same time, they coordinate with IT teams to implement and maintain databases, software, and analytical tools. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills and adaptability, as analysts often translate technical needs across disciplines and troubleshoot data-related challenges together.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research informatics analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research Informatics Analyst, you need strong data analysis skills, a background in life sciences or informatics, and a relevant degree such as in bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with databases, scripting languages (like Python or R), and electronic data capture systems is typically required, and certifications in data management or clinical informatics are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential to translate complex data into actionable research insights. These competencies ensure accurate data management, facilitate effective collaboration with research teams, and support the integrity and impact of scientific studies.

The Associate Director will lead the product and technology delivery of laboratory informatics platforms, including Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN), sample management, entity registration, and workflow orchestration. The role partners closely with scientific, technical operations stakeholders across ReDev and CMC to translate business needs into scalable, compliant, and fit-for-purpose solutions that improve traceability, workflow efficiency, and data quality.
This role does not own QC LIMS systems, which are managed within Quality Technology. Instead, this role partners closely with IT Quality Technology to ensure aligned data models, integrated workflows, and seamless end-to-end laboratory processes across ReDev, CMC, and QC environment.
This position requires a leader who can balance business partnership, product ownership, and disciplined delivery in a regulated environment, while ensuring platforms evolve to support future analytics and AI-driven use cases.
Key Responsibilities
Lead Delivery of Laboratory Informatics Platforms
Own the delivery and lifecycle management of informatics solutions across ELN, sample management, entity registration, and workflow orchestration. Define and execute platform roadmaps aligned with business priorities across ReDev and CMC.
Translate Business Needs into Digital Capabilities
Partner with laboratory, scientific, and technical operations stakeholders to understand workflows and requirements. Design and deliver solutions that improve data capture, process efficiency, traceability, and user experience.
Establish Product and Platform Governance
Drive governance for demand intake, prioritization, release management, and change control. Define standards for configuration, data models, and system usage to ensure consistency and scalability across labs.
Enable End-to-End Laboratory Workflows
Design and deliver integrated workflows that connect experiment execution, sample lifecycle management, entity registration, and result capture.
Partner with Quality Technology to ensure alignment between Laboratory Informatics platforms and QC workflows supported by LIMS, while maintaining clear ownership boundaries.
Lead Instrument Data Capture Strategy
Own the strategy and requirements for instrument data capture across ReDev and CMC environments, and define how instrument-generated data is integrated and contextualized within ELN and related platforms.
Partner with:
  • Lab Computing and Facilities Technology for instrument connectivity, deployment, and operations support.
  • Quality Technoloy for QC instrument data requirements and compliance expectations.
Partner with Quality Technology on QC Integration
Collaborate closely with the Quality Technology team to enable seamless integration between laboratory informatics platforms and QC LIMS systems.
Ensure alignment on:
  • data models and master data (e.g., samples, entities)
  • workflow handoffs and traceability
  • integration patterns and data flows
  • end-to-end process consistency across lab domains

Ensure Compliance, Data Integrity, and Sustainability
Partner with Quality and validation teams to ensure platforms meet applicable compliance and data integrity standards. Support validated system lifecycle practices where applicable and ensure solutions are designed for long-term sustainability and audit readiness.
Partner Across IT and Business Functions
Collaborate with enterprise IT teams (Data/AI, Infrastructure, Security) to ensure platforms are secure, scalable, and integrated with enterprise capabilities. Build strong relationships with business stakeholders and external vendors.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 10-12 years of experience in laboratory informatics, digital lab technology, or related domains within biotech/pharma
  • Proven experience delivering or managing platforms such as ELN, sample management, entity registration, or related laboratory systems
  • Strong understanding of laboratory workflows across Research and/or CMC environments
  • Experience translating business needs into system designs, roadmaps, and delivery plans
  • Experience leading cross-functional delivery involving business stakeholders, vendors, and IT teams
  • Working knowledge of GxP, Part 11, CSV principles, and data integrity (ALCOA+) as applicable to laboratory systems
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

Preferred
  • Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Experience with workflow orchestration and cross-platform integration in lab environments
  • Familiarity with instrument data capture and scientific data models
  • Experience with SaaS laboratory platforms and modern vendor ecosystems
  • Experience in RNAi, oligonucleotide, or advanced modality environments
  • Experience partnering with Quality Technology teams and integrating with QC LIMS systems
