Job description

Position Summary:

The Research Engineer is responsible for assisting in the development and research of new technologies for the Rice Center for Membrane Excellence. This position participates in the planning, design, and execution of research projects; conducts experiments; collects and analyzes data; and contributes to the interpretation and communication of research findings. The Research Engineer maintains accurate research records, prepares technical reports and presentations, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, stays current on relevant technological advancements, and adheres to established safety and regulatory requirements in support of ongoing research initiatives.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and highly organized engineer with strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will have experience supporting research and development activities, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and contributing to innovative technology solutions. The candidate should demonstrate strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, a commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.


Workplace Location: 

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $63,731 - $80,000 annually
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Two or more (2+) years of experience in applied research, experimental testing, or engineering project development

Skills:

  • Proficient and comprehensive knowledge of the relevant field of specialization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with careful attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain quality and safety standards.
  • Ability to encourage teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to solve challenging engineering problems.
  • Strong organizational skills.
     

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in the planning, design, and execution of research projects under the guidance of senior researchers or project leads.
  • Conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and assist in interpreting research results.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to contribute ideas and insights to ongoing research initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments, results, methodologies, and related research activities.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, technical documents, presentations, and other materials outlining research findings.
  • Stay current on industry trends, advancements, and emerging technologies relevant to the field of research.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards during experiments and research activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
