What is a research assistant software developer?

Research Assistant Software Developers are professionals who support research projects by developing, maintaining, and optimizing software tools and applications. They work alongside researchers, helping to design experiments, process data, and create algorithms or simulations necessary for the research. Their role bridges the gap between software engineering and academic research, ensuring that technical solutions meet the specific needs of scientific studies. This position often requires strong programming skills, familiarity with research methodologies, and the ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by research assistant software developers when working on interdisciplinary research projects?

Research Assistant Software Developers often collaborate with researchers from diverse academic backgrounds, which can introduce challenges in communication and aligning technical requirements with research goals. Adapting software solutions to evolving project needs and integrating new methodologies or datasets can require quick learning and flexibility. Balancing rigorous coding standards with rapid prototyping, especially under tight research deadlines, is another frequent challenge. However, this role provides valuable exposure to cutting-edge research and fosters strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research assistant software developer, and why are they important?

A Research Assistant Software Developer should have solid programming skills, a background in computer science or a related field, and experience with software development methodologies. Familiarity with tools like Git, Python or Java, and data analysis libraries, as well as knowledge of research-specific platforms, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the development of robust research software, facilitate collaboration with research teams, and contribute to the advancement of scientific projects.

About Geotab Vitality:

Geotab Vitality is not just a joint venture; it's a pioneering force at the intersection of telematics and behavioral science, reimagining how global fleets operate. As a collaborative powerhouse between Geotab and Vitality Global, we're leveraging Geotab's vast network of 55,000+ customers and 800+ global reseller partners to drive material improvements in driver safety, sustainability, productivity, and efficiency.

What you'll do:

We are seeking an experienced and highly-motivated Senior Software Developer to take on a senior technical role within our development organization. This individual will be a key driver in developing our applications, ensuring code quality and consistency within the team, and creating a seamless, efficient environment for our development teams to build from.

This is a unique opportunity for a forward-thinking engineer to have significant technical freedom and directly influence our aim for a modern, cloud-first architecture, including the selection and implementation of new technology stacks together with the team.

How you'll make an impact:
  • Lead the technical design and implementation of complex, ambiguous features and services from concept to deployment.

  • Take hands-on ownership of critical coding tasks, translating complex business needs into robust, scalable, and well-tested solutions.

  • Participate in technical decision-making by providing recommendations, evaluating trade-offs, and assessing risks.

  • Research, prototype, and advocate for emerging technologies and patterns to solve complex problems and improve system efficiency.

  • Identify and champion opportunities for technical improvement and refactoring, looking beyond immediate tasks to address long-term system health.

  • Champion and enforce coding standards, conventions, and best practices across the team.

  • Actively contribute to evolving branching strategies, version control workflows, and release management processes.

  • Conduct in-depth, constructive code reviews that focus on architecture, scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability.

  • Provide detailed feedback that elevates code quality and promotes knowledge sharing across the team.

  • Proactively identify, prioritize, and drive the execution of plans to refactor and manage technical debt.

  • Implement preventive measures to minimize accumulation of new technical debt.

  • Identify and remove friction in the development lifecycle by improving build tools, CI/CD pipelines, testing automation, and local environments.

  • Enhance system observability and create comprehensive technical documentation.

  • Act as a technical mentor for junior and mid-level engineers through pair programming, design discussions, and day-to-day guidance.

  • Serve as a key escalation point for complex debugging, guiding the team to identify root causes and implement robust solutions.

  • Lead knowledge-sharing sessions and promote a culture of continuous learning.

What you'll bring to this role:
  • Post-Secondary Diploma/Degree specialization in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in Software development or similar roles with demonstrated progression in technical complexity and ownership.

  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud services and gcloud CLI for cloud-native application development and deployment.

  • Strong proficiency in building scalable, high-performance applications using C# and .NET Core framework.

  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining distributed systems using microservices patterns.

  • Proficient in container orchestration, deployment, scaling, and management using Kubernetes.

  • Strong understanding of containerization technologies and Docker best practices.

  • Experience with IaC tools and practices for automated infrastructure provisioning and management.

  • Deep knowledge of OIDC and OAuth 2.0 protocols, implementation, and security best practices.

  • Proficiency in managing environment variables and configuration management across multiple environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and drive technical standards and code governance policies.

  • Strong understanding of modern software architecture, design patterns, and cloud-native principles.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with a systematic approach to debugging complex issues.

  • Proactive mindset with ability to identify technical improvements and advocate for solutions.

  • Able to balance multiple priorities and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong collaboration skills with proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.

  • This position has no managerial responsibilities and no direct reports.

If you got this far, we hope you're feeling excited about this role! Even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
