What is a research assistant software developer?

Research Assistant Software Developers are professionals who support research projects by developing, maintaining, and optimizing software tools and applications. They work alongside researchers, helping to design experiments, process data, and create algorithms or simulations necessary for the research. Their role bridges the gap between software engineering and academic research, ensuring that technical solutions meet the specific needs of scientific studies. This position often requires strong programming skills, familiarity with research methodologies, and the ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by research assistant software developers when working on interdisciplinary research projects?

Research Assistant Software Developers often collaborate with researchers from diverse academic backgrounds, which can introduce challenges in communication and aligning technical requirements with research goals. Adapting software solutions to evolving project needs and integrating new methodologies or datasets can require quick learning and flexibility. Balancing rigorous coding standards with rapid prototyping, especially under tight research deadlines, is another frequent challenge. However, this role provides valuable exposure to cutting-edge research and fosters strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research assistant software developer, and why are they important?

A Research Assistant Software Developer should have solid programming skills, a background in computer science or a related field, and experience with software development methodologies. Familiarity with tools like Git, Python or Java, and data analysis libraries, as well as knowledge of research-specific platforms, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the development of robust research software, facilitate collaboration with research teams, and contribute to the advancement of scientific projects.

Job description

About AQR Capital Management
AQR is a global investment firm built at the intersection of financial theory and practical application. We strive to deliver concrete, long-term results by looking past market noise to identify and isolate the factors that matter most, and by developing ideas that stand up to rigorous testing. By putting theory into practice, we have become a leader in alternative strategies and an innovator in traditional portfolio management since 1998.
AQR takes a systematic, research-driven approach, applying quantitative tools to process fundamental information and manage risk. Our clients include institutional investors, such as pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations and sovereign wealth funds, as well as financial advisors.
The Team
AQR's Research Engineering team is seeking a strong technical engineer to strengthen our business initiatives in QRD, focused on our Global Stock Selection group.
The Global Stock Selection (GSS) Quantitative Research Development (QRD) group enables and supports Global Stock Selection Research at AQR. GSS QRD maintains a sophisticated infrastructure and tooling environment in support of the business, as well as a complex production process including orchestrating numerous workflows with large amounts of data. QRD is responsible for signal generation and model construction as well as many other aspects of portfolio construction that go into the running of our strategies. The QRD team works closely with researchers to create new systematic investment strategies and refine existing ones, applying technology expertise along with a practical understanding of markets to implement research ideas and develop systems that further enable the business.
Your Role
As a software engineer at AQR, you will build or extend our:
  • Scalable, AWS-based storage and computing infrastructure
  • Generalized research platform
  • Data ingestion and validation engine
  • Model computation and signal generation pipeline
  • Machine learning / Natural Language Processing pipeline

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of professional software engineering experience building production software.
  • Strong programming skills in Python; experience with C++ is a plus.
  • Experience developing software on Linux.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications using AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, scalable applications, and large-scale data processing.
  • Proficiency with SQL and experience working with structured data at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building or integrating native AI applications, including practical experience working with large language models (LLMs), AI agents, or AI-assisted workflows.
  • Solid understanding of the strengths, limitations, and practical tradeoffs of LLMs, agentic systems, and modern AI technologies.
  • Ability to take open-ended business or technical problems, work with stakeholders to clarify requirements, and develop practical, well-reasoned technical solutions.
  • Comfortable operating in environments where requirements evolve, exercising sound engineering judgment rather than relying on detailed specifications.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design, testing, code quality, and maintainability.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and work effectively across teams.
  • Experience supporting quantitative research, machine learning platforms, or financial technology applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity with investment research, signal generation, portfolio construction, or trading systems is a plus.

The salary range for this role is expected to be $140,000 to $160,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is accurate for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, depending upon factors such as skills, experience, location, or other business and organizational needs. This wage range may also be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), and any other benefits to eligible employees.
Note: No amount of pay is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable. The amount and availability of any bonus, commission, benefits, or any other form of compensation and benefits that are allocable to a particular employee remains in the Company's sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified at the Company's sole discretion, consistent with the law.
