Job description

Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated undergraduate research assistant for the project, Multimodal AI for translating facial and vocal cues into natural language to support post-stroke communication. As the first phase of this project, we aim to understand stakeholder perspectives on AI-supported new technology for post-stroke communication. Information will be collected through online surveys and virtual and/or telephone interviews.
Responsibilities*
Under faculty supervision, the student will conduct literature reviews; help develop survey and interview questions; assist with Institutional Review Board (IRB) preparation; coordinate participant recruitment and scheduling; conduct interviews with participants; and collect, organize, and manage research data. The student will also help analyze and summarize the findings and contribute to reports, presentations, and manuscripts intended for potential publication. This position provides hands-on experience in human-subjects research, accessible technology, health communication, and human-centered AI.
Required Qualifications*
  • Must be a current UM-Flint Undergraduate student
  • Basic knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with research participants and coordinate and schedule virtual and/or telephone interviews.
  • Ability to organize, manage, and summarize survey and interview data and findings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under faculty supervision.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Familiarity with surveys, interviews, spreadsheets, or qualitative analysis.
  • Experience with Qualtrics, Excel, Python, or similar tools is a plus.

Modes of Work
Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
