Position Overview Section
The Epidemiologist supports the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) Public Health and Readiness (PHR) Directorate by conducting epidemiological surveillance, research, data analysis, and public health investigations that improve the health and operational readiness of Air Force personnel. This position analyzes military health surveillance data, supports outbreak investigations, develops research protocols, and collaborates with military and civilian stakeholders to enhance disease surveillance systems and evidence-based public health initiatives.
Essential Job Functions
Public Health Surveillance
  • Monitor and assess the health status of U.S. Air Force populations through analysis of surveillance databases, including ESSENCE, DRSi, and other military health information systems.
  • Monitor data quality, completeness, and integrity across multiple surveillance systems.
  • Provide technical support, quality assurance, and administrative maintenance for health surveillance applications.
  • Assist authorized users with system access and maintain accurate user account information.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for surveillance data requests, analyses, and report generation.
  • Develop and maintain data dictionaries, metadata, and data mapping documentation across multiple surveillance systems.

Epidemiology & Research
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and execution of epidemiological studies and public health research.
  • Support outbreak investigations and provide epidemiological consultation to military public health personnel.
  • Assist in identifying and prioritizing future research topics affecting Air Force health and readiness.
  • Develop research protocols and prepare submissions for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval.
  • Coordinate research activities with military installations, Major Commands (MAJCOMs), Air Force Medical Command (AFMEDCOM), the Defense Health Agency (DHA), and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and briefings communicating research findings and surveillance results.

Data Management & Analysis
  • Analyze large public health datasets using statistical software and epidemiological methods.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve surveillance databases and data management protocols.
  • Recommend enhancements to data collection processes, reporting systems, and analytical methodologies.
  • Document programming code, analytical processes, and reporting procedures according to USAFSAM standards.
  • Develop automated reports, reporting dashboards, and menu-driven reporting tools to improve user access to surveillance data.

Collaboration & Program Support
  • Build collaborative relationships with healthcare providers, epidemiologists, IT personnel, and data owners to improve data quality and information sharing.
  • Represent USAFSAM/PHR during surveillance partnerships and collaborative public health initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of written communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Support special data requests, literature reviews, and public health consultations.
  • Provide technical support for Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office applications, and Adobe Acrobat related to epidemiological data products.

Education & Training
  • Develop educational materials and training programs focused on epidemiology, disease surveillance, and public health.
  • Deliver training to USAFSAM personnel on surveillance systems, data products, and epidemiological methods.
  • Educate USAFSAM students and other military personnel on epidemiology and public health principles.
  • Support preparation of conference presentations, scientific posters, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Present research findings at scientific meetings, professional conferences, and government forums.

Minimum Position Requirements
  • Master's degree or higher in one of the following:
    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Biostatistics
    • Or a closely related field approved by USAFSAM/PHR.
  • Strong knowledge of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health principles.
  • Experience utilizing public health surveillance systems and the ability to work with:
    • Disease Reporting System internet (DRSi)
    • ESSENCE
    • MHS GENESIS
    • DOEHRS-HC
    • Individual Longitudinal Exposure Record (ILER)
    • Aeromedical Services Information Management System (ASIMS)
    • Envision
  • Experience using:
    • SAS
    • SAS Enterprise Guide

  • Working knowledge of R and/or Stata.
  • Experience conducting epidemiological studies and statistical analyses, including:
    • Descriptive statistics
    • Measures of association
    • Statistical significance testing

  • Experience developing research protocols and preparing Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions.
  • Ability to complete or maintain required certifications including:
    • HIPAA Training
    • Scientific and Technical Information (STINFO) Training
    • Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Training
  • Ability to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
