Job description
The Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Biomathematics (DBBB), the Department of Family Medicine, both academic departments within Georgetown University Medical Center, and the Georgetown University Center for Health Equity are seeking an assistant professor on the research-track. The ideal candidate for this position is expected to have a strong record and interest in collaborative research in health equity and health services research. The candidate must possess a PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics or related areas, with strong interest in health equity studies and health services research as well as expertise in population science research including applied methodology in health program design, and evaluation, community-based participatory studies, e.g., cluster studies and causal inference.
The DBBB is active in statistical and bioinformatics research and team science research. Faculty collaborate extensively with researchers in primary care, cancer, neuroscience, minority health and population science research to provide expertise and support in biostatics and biomathematics for diverse faculty. DBBB additionally offers both a Master of Science and Ph.D. program in Biostatistics and provides consulting expertise to the Georgetown community with respect to the design and data analysis of clinical trials, basic science, and population science research projects. The department has over 15 faculty members, 5 biostatistical analysts and supportive administrative staff.
The Department of Family Medicine aims to improve community health, one family at a time. The department has been a leader in conducting community oriented, patient-based, and interdisciplinary research. The Research Division actively develops evidence-based and patient-oriented research often in collaboration with multiple institutions and disciplines to allow important clinical questions to be answered and directs the Capital Area Primary Care Research Network (CAPRICORN), a DC area practice based research network with more than 100 members. The Department also aims to teach Family Medicine to medical student, residents, fellow, and health care professionals through personalized, evidence-based patient centered care in a medical home model with a special emphasis on care to the underserved. The department has 3 clinical practices, 20 core academic faculty members, 350 appointed clinical faculty, 10 clinical nurses, and 20 administrative staff including administrative officers, financial and grant administrators, navigators, referral specialists, education coordinators, and research associates.
The Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies (RGC), aspires to create and curate evidence to inform policies that support family medicine and primary care and improve individual and population health. The RGC is part of the American Academy of Family Physicians, has an affiliation agreement with Georgetown University, the Center for Health Equity, and the Department of Family Medicine for collaborative health services and workforce related research, employing research analysts, epidemiologists, physician scientists, and population health experts. Postdoctoral research fellows assigned to the Center for Health Equity and the Robert Graham Center, master's degree or PhD biostatistics students, and project manager will be assigned to the Robert Graham Center and to the work of the new assistant professor on the research track.
The Georgetown University Center for Health Equity is a new education and training center focused on distinguishing the Georgetown University graduate as dedicated to lifelong community service and advancing health equity. It is focused on education, training and faculty development in longitudinal community-based learning, scholarships for learners, mentorship and research mentorship programs.

The mission of the medical center rests on the three pillars of research, teaching, and patient care under the principle of cura personalis - care of the whole person. Research emphasizes community outreach and collaboration, in recognition of the contributions of social determinants on health and well-being.
Medical education and research is conducted in the MedStar Health System, which includes the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, as well as within the University. GUMC and MedStar Health Inc. have a clinical partnership agreement under which MedStar Health owns, operates, and has financial responsibility for Georgetown University's clinical enterprise that includes a hospital, faculty practice group, and a network of community physician practices.
Position Responsibilities
Biostatistics faculty member will report directly to Michelle Roett, MD, MPH, FAAFP, Professor and Chair, Founding Director of the Center for Health Equity and Chair for The Department of Family Medicine, be jointly appointment in the DBBB, reporting directly to Ming Tan, PhD, Professor and Chair, DBBB, and will collaborate with other members of the GUMC and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital community including Yalda Jabbarpour, MD, Director of the Robert Graham Center, with expertise in health policy and health services research, Alison Huffstetler, MD, Medical Director of RGC, with expertise in health policy and health services research, and Karey Sutton, PhD, Scientific Director, Health Equity Research for the MedStar Health Research Institute, with expertise in health equity research.
The ideal candidate will have excellent research skills and experience with the use of clinical and observational data for research and program evaluation, health services research, qualitative and quantitative methods. The candidate will be closely involved with active research efforts occurring with the Department of Family Medicine, Center for Health Equity, and the Robert Graham Center. The candidate will be expected to provide support using state of the art biostatical methodologies for health services research studies and programs including model development, health program design, hypothesis testing, and data management. The candidate will assist Family Medicine and Center for Health Equity faculty in study and program design; setting objectives and evaluating subsequent progress; and providing analytical leadership for publications, presentations and grant submissions. The candidate will also provide biostatistical support for members and the director of CAPRICORN.
The candidate will also assist in planning and development of curriculum related to biostatics, bioinformatics, and biomathematics provided to the Undergraduate Medical Students through the course Evidence Based Medicine and Population Health, as well as to Graduate Medical Education trainees at the MedStar Georgetown University Family Medicine Residency Program and Fellowships.
The candidate will be encouraged to develop an independent research program which complements current efforts of DBBB, Department of Family Medicine, and the Center for Health Equity. Individuals with expertise in health data analytics are particularly encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts high-quality research in the areas of interest;
- Teaches medical students, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows;
- Works closely with research faculty, fellows, research assistants and associates, and contributes to joint projects;
- Participates with teaching and outreach activities and programs as directed by the Department of Family Medicine;
- Presents and publishes research findings at conferences and peer-reviewed publications;
- Prepares progress reports for funding sources;
- Seeks external funding to support and expand research activities to enhance the prestige and visibility of the University and to initiate research projects with government, private sector and public entities and the community.
