The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999 as an international independent agency to lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport. As the global regulatory body, WADA's primary role is to develop, harmonize and coordinate anti-doping rules and policies across all sports and countries. Our key activities include: scientific and social science research; education; intelligence & investigations; development of anti-doping capacity; and, monitoring of compliance with the World Anti-Doping Program.


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Senior Manager, Research plays a strategic leadership role in shaping and executing WADA's scientific research agenda. Leading a portfolio of high-impact research initiatives from concept to implementation, ensuring alignment with WADA's Strategic Plan and scientific priorities.


The role is responsible for translating scientific innovation into operational anti-doping solutions by fostering collaboration across WADA departments, accredited laboratories, academic institutions, and international stakeholders. The Senior Manager provides strategic advice on research priorities, oversees and manages complex multidisciplinary projects, manages scientific partnerships, and drives the effective transfer of research outcomes into anti-doping programs that strengthen the global anti-doping system.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


      • Leading the development and implementation of scientific research initiatives in alignment with WADA's Strategic Plan and evolving priorities in anti-doping science;
      • Managing a portfolio of research projects, ensuring effective planning, resource coordination, risk management, and the successful delivery of high-quality outcomes;
      • Identifying emerging scientific opportunities, research needs, and technological developments, and contributing to the definition of research priorities and funding initiatives that address the evolving needs of the anti-doping community;
      • Overseeing the full lifecycle of research projects, including proposal evaluation, project planning, milestone monitoring, performance assessment, and supporting the transition of validated research outcomes into operational anti-doping activities;
      • Building and maintaining productive relationships with researchers, WADA-accredited laboratories, international organizations, funding agencies, and other stakeholders to strengthen scientific collaboration and maximize the impact of WADA's research activities;
      • Providing scientific expertise and working collaboratively across the Agency with colleagues from Science & Medicine, Legal Affairs, IT, Digital Insights, Compliance, Rules and Standards, Communications, Finance, and external expert groups to support the effective delivery of cross-functional initiatives;
      • Facilitating the translation of research findings into practical applications, supporting their implementation by WADA-accredited laboratories and integration into operational programs such as the Athlete Biological Passport, the Prohibited List, and other anti-doping initiatives;
      • Leading scientific discussions, promoting multidisciplinary collaboration, and proactively identifying and mitigating project risks to ensure the timely achievement of research objectives;
      • Coordinating the scientific evaluation and peer-review process for research funding applications by engaging subject matter experts and ensuring a rigorous, transparent, and evidence-based assessment process;
      • Developing and monitoring key performance indicators and other measures to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of research investments, while contributing to the continuous improvement of WADA's research program;
      • Representing WADA at scientific conferences, workshops, and expert meetings, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and fostering collaboration within the global anti-doping research community;
      • Supporting the development of colleagues by sharing expertise, encouraging collaboration, and promoting a culture of scientific excellence, innovation, and continuous learning;
      • Contributing to broader departmental initiatives by providing scientific advice and supporting projects that advance WADA's mission and the effectiveness of the global anti-doping system.


      QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

      • Doctorate degree with experience in a relevant field (e.g., chemistry, life sciences);
      • Good knowledge of the field of anti-doping and international sport;
      • Demonstrated experience leading complex research portfolios and multidisciplinary teams;
      • Experience managing budgets, governance processes, and research funding programs;
      • Strong leadership, coaching, and people development capabilities;
      • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships;
      • Excellent executive communication and presentation skills;
      • Excellent oral and written skills in one of the two WADA official languages (English/French) and very good command of the other official language; Additional languages would be an asset;
      • Periodic work in the evening or on weekends;
      • No travel required;

      LES RESPONSABILITES CLES


      • Diriger le developpement et la mise en uvre d'initiatives de recherche scientifique en accord avec le plan strategique de l'AMA et les priorites evolutives en matiere de science antidopage;
      • Gerer un portefeuille de projets de recherche, garantir une planification efficace, la coordination des ressources, la gestion des risques et la reussite des resultats de haute qualite;
      • Identifier les opportunites scientifiques emergentes, les besoins de recherche et les developpements technologiques, et contribuer a la definition des priorites de recherche et des initiatives de financement repondant aux besoins evolutifs de la communaute antidopage;
      • Superviser l'ensemble du cycle de vie des projets de recherche, y compris l'evaluation des propositions, la planification de projets, le suivi des jalons, l'evaluation des performances, et le soutien a la transition des resultats de recherche valides vers des activites antidopage operationnelles;
      • Construire et maintenir des relations productives avec les chercheurs, les laboratoires accredites par l'AMA, les organisations internationales, les organismes de financement et d'autres parties prenantes afin de renforcer la collaboration scientifique et de maximiser l'impact des activites de recherche de l'AMA;
      • Fournir une expertise scientifique et collaborer a travers l'Agence avec des collegues des domaines des sciences et de la medecine, des affaires juridiques, de l'informatique, des perspectives numeriques, de la conformite, regles et standards, de la communication, de la finance et de groupes d'experts externes pour soutenir la mise en uvre efficace d'initiatives interfonctionnelles;
      • Faciliter la traduction des resultats de recherche en applications pratiques, soutenir leur mise en uvre par des laboratoires accredites par l'AMA et leur integration dans des programmes operationnels tels que le passeport biologique de l'athlete, la liste des interdictions et d'autres initiatives antidopage;
      • Diriger les discussions scientifiques, promouvoir la collaboration multidisciplinaire et identifier et attenuer de maniere proactive les risques lies aux projets afin d'assurer la realisation rapide des objectifs de recherche;
      • Coordonner le processus d'evaluation scientifique et d'evaluation par les pairs pour les demandes de financement de la recherche en faisant appel a des experts du domaine et en garantissant un processus d'evaluation rigoureux, transparent et fonde sur des preuves;
      • Developper et suivre des indicateurs cles de performance et d'autres mesures pour evaluer l'efficacite et l'impact des investissements en recherche, tout en contribuant a l'amelioration continue du programme de recherche de l'AMA;
      • Representer l'AMA lors de conferences scientifiques, ateliers et reunions d'experts, contribuer a l'echange de connaissances et favoriser la collaboration au sein de la communaute mondiale de recherche antidopage;
      • Soutenir le developpement des collegues en partageant leur expertise, en encourageant la collaboration et en promouvant une culture d'excellence scientifique, d'innovation et d'apprentissage continu;
      • Contribuer aux initiatives departementales plus larges en fournissant des conseils scientifiques et en soutenant des projets qui font progresser la mission de l'AMA et l'efficacite du systeme antidopage mondial.


        LES QUALIFICATIONS ET LES COMPETENCES


          • Doctorat avec experience dans un domaine pertinent (par exemple, chimie, sciences de la vie);
          • Bonne connaissance du domaine antidopage et du sport international;
          • Experience demontree a la tete de portefeuilles de recherche complexes et d'equipes multidisciplinaires;
          • Experience de la gestion des budgets, des processus de gouvernance et des programmes de financement de la recherche;
          • Fortes capacites de leadership, de coaching et de developpement des personnes;
          • Excellentes competences en travail d'equipe et interpersonnelles, avec la capacite de construire des relations de travail positives;
          • Excellentes competences en communication executive et en presentation;
          • Excellentes competences orales et ecrites dans l'une des deux langues officielles de l'AMA (anglais/francais) et tres bonne maitrise de l'autre langue officielle ; des langues supplementaires seraient un atout;
