What is research and development science?

Research and development (R&D) science involves the systematic investigation and creation of new knowledge, products, or processes within scientific fields. Professionals in R&D science work to innovate and improve technologies, products, or services, often collaborating with other scientists and engineers. Their work is essential for driving progress in industries such as pharmaceuticals, technology, and manufacturing. Typical tasks include designing experiments, analyzing data, and developing prototypes to solve complex problems or meet market needs.

Is research and development a high paying job?

Research and Development (R&D) science roles often offer competitive salaries, especially for those with advanced degrees, specialized skills, or experience in fields like pharmaceuticals, technology, or engineering. Salaries can vary based on industry, location, and level of expertise, but R&D positions generally provide above-average compensation compared to many other scientific roles.

Which career works in research and development?

A career in research and development typically involves roles such as R&D scientist, research engineer, or product developer. These professionals work in laboratories or innovation settings, utilizing skills in scientific methods, data analysis, and experimentation to create new products or improve existing ones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Research and Development Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research and Development Scientist, you need a strong background in scientific research, analytical thinking, and a relevant advanced degree (such as a Ph.D. or Master's) in your field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and industry-specific protocols or certifications is often required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities drive innovation, ensure accurate results, and facilitate collaboration in developing new products or technologies.

What does a research and development scientist do?

A research and development scientist conducts experiments and studies to develop new products, improve existing ones, or discover innovative solutions. They analyze data, use laboratory equipment, and collaborate with teams to translate scientific ideas into practical applications, often requiring knowledge of scientific methods and technical skills.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Research and Development Science, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Research and Development Science often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative thinking with practical constraints, managing project timelines, and navigating cross-functional collaboration. Adapting quickly to new technologies and unexpected experimental results is common, requiring resilience and problem-solving skills. Effective communication with colleagues from different scientific and engineering backgrounds is crucial for translating research into viable products. Building strong teamwork and maintaining flexibility can help address these challenges and foster a productive R&D environment.

What jobs will be left by 2030?

Research and Development Science roles are expected to evolve with increased automation and AI integration, potentially reducing demand for routine tasks. However, jobs requiring complex problem-solving, creativity, and specialized knowledge in R&D are likely to remain in demand, especially those involving interdisciplinary skills and advanced technical expertise.

Job description

About us

Eli Health is making continuous hormone monitoring possible so users can support their daily and long-term health. No more waiting days to track key biomarkers—get results you can use within minutes. Eli’s flagship product, Hormometer™, is the first instant hormone monitoring platform to deliver results from saliva to mobile app—anytime, anywhere.

Developed over six years of R&D, over 2,000 product iterations, and backed by a dozen patent-pending innovations, Eli’s award-winning platform turns hormones into measurable signals you can track and improve. Just as the thermometer and glucometer have transformed health for millions, Eli’s platform is poised to be the next major evolution in tracking changes in stress, endurance, sleep, and more.

About the role

Eli is looking for an R&D Scientist. You will be a key member of our R&D team, helping to discover new ways to improve current and future iterations of our assay technology. Your primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Contribute to building a novel technology that can shape the next generation of women’s healthcare and at-home testing.

  • Independently design experiments with an exceptional variable control for lateral flow assay development and optimization.

  • Run experiments, record and analyze data, as well as interpret and present results to your team.

  • Find creative and innovative ways to solve R&D challenges.

  • Maintain high-quality work and organization while conducting experiments at a very high rate.

  • Exercise exceptional wet laboratory etiquette, team collaboration skills, and work ethic.

This description is not exhaustive. You will have a lot of autonomy over your work as Eli’s technology and research efforts progress.

About you

  • You have a Bachelor's or a Master's in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field.

  • You have 2+ years of wet lab experience, including 1+ years of laboratory experience beyond the classroom.

  • You have 1+ years of experience leading your own projects in a wet lab environment.

  • You have experience working with and developing assays (keywords include: lateral flow assays (LFA), immunoassays, ELISA, In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD), point-of-care diagnostics, rapid diagnostic tests, paper-based sensors, biosensors, microfluidic, bioconjugation, nanoparticle conjugation, antibody purification).

  • You have experience working with bioconjugation techniques.

  • You are a self-starter who also enjoys collaborating and sharing knowledge and ideas. You think critically and creatively.

  • It is an added asset if some of your experience was at an early-stage startup or related environment (fast-paced, high-growth, innovative, small independent teams, etc.)

If you don’t exactly match the description but still believe you are the right person to join the team, please reach out. We value mindset and character.

Why you’ll love working at Eli

  • You’ll work with a group of talented and mission-driven people eager to improve lifelong health at scale.

  • You’ll be part of the core team developing and commercializing the first product that monitors hormonal data daily and over a lifetime.

  • You’ll join the early-stage startup phase and have a wide-reaching impact in a constantly evolving, fast-paced environment.

  • You’ll be part of a small (<25 people), high-performing, and diverse team where everything you do results in tangible impact and shapes the company’s trajectory.

  • You’ll be in an environment where people drive their own work, think creatively about open-ended problems, and solve them proactively.

  • You’ll get health insurance (medical, dental, vision, and more) to ensure you and your family stay physically and mentally at your best.

  • You’ll have flexibility over your schedule and vacations. We seek to hire great people, then give them the autonomy and space they need to achieve their goals.

  • Although our office and R&D facilities are in Montreal, we have a distributed team. We prioritize asynchronous workflows and minimize meetings to focus on the work itself.

  • You and your +1 will have unlimited free access to the Bota Bota spa in Montreal to recharge.
