What is a repechage in sports?

A repechage is a system used in some sports competitions that gives participants who failed to qualify in the main round another chance to advance. Typically, athletes or teams who did not win their initial heat or match can compete in additional rounds for a spot in the finals or next stage. This system is commonly seen in sports like wrestling, rowing, judo, and track cycling. The purpose of repechage is to ensure that strong competitors who may have faced particularly tough opponents early on still have a fair opportunity to progress.
