What will the Shop Manager do?

Manages shop and parts staff and related shop operations. Manages Fuel pumps on site to keep in compliance with OH State Fire Marshall’s office and BUSTR.

What is the Shop Manager responsible for?

  • Manages the repair and maintenance of company owned equipment to include the organization of yard.
  • Lead employees to meet the department’s expectations for productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment.
  • Provide effective performance feedback through performance evaluations, recognition, and/or disciplinary action, with the assistance of Director of Maintenance and Human Resources, when necessary.
  • Work with Director and Human Resources to interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees.
  • Provide guidance and direction to all staff members assigned to Fleet Maintenance.
  • Determine schedules and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of equipment, and skill of personnel.
  • Monitor/manage attendance, absenteeism, overtime, and paid time off approvals.
  • Prepares work schedules and handles service calls to meet Operational needs and assure that equipment is available as required.
  • Oversight of parts clerk and all parts activities to maintain adequate supplies.
  • Provides training and assistance to staff mechanics.
  • Works with equipment vendors to understand the maintenance requirements and capabilities of all equipment.
  • Inspect the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assess structural damage and assign needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).
  • Evaluates equipment after repairs, maintenance, or safety checks.
  • Documents equipment status before and after rental.
  • Handles driver complaints regarding equipment condition or operation.
  • Promote safety awareness.
  • Perform quality control checks.
  • Update, maintain and keep organized equipment service records.
  • Create, update, close and bill work orders.
  • Work with warranty personnel to ensure claims are filed in a timely manner.
  • Commission new equipment and issue new hire prep assignments.
  • Order parts, return parts, and perform parts inventory.
  • Manage time and attendance activities for all shop employees.
  • Perform other duties assigned as assigned by the Director / Assistant Director.
  • Maintains a clear line of communication to the Director of Maintenance and other staff in the maintenance department.
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Inspect and monitor work areas to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
  • Investigate accidents or injuries and prepare reports of findings.
  • Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Occasionally may perform service calls for emergency breakdowns.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate/OSHA Standards and perform all work in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains operation / compliance of diesel fuel island.


What knowledge, skills and abilities are required for the Shop Manager role?

  • Class A CDL license is preferred but not required.
  • Certified welder is preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years’ experience in class 8 tractor truck maintenance with background of hydraulics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of class 8 tractor trailer maintenance.
  • Proficient in electronic diagnostics Cummins and Paccar.
  • Experience with Peterbilt chassis a plus.
  • Knowledge of DOT compliance, laws, rules, regulations, and safety is helpful.
  • Knowledge of Cetaris and Samsara a plus.
  • Computer literate. Microsoft, Outlook, and Excel a plus.
  • Attention to detail and possess a high level of accuracy.
  • Comfortable working in a fast pace environment and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with dispatch team and auto haulers.
  • Excellent communication skills both internally and with customers.
  • Work may require more than 40 hours per week.

Visual requirements include reading off a computer screen as well as printed materials. A high degree of dexterity is required due to frequent use of a telephone console.


Verbal and auditory requirements include the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone as well as in person.


There is a moderate level of grasping, lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects of more than 25 lbs.
