What does a remote Windows driver developer do?

A Remote Windows Driver Developer designs, develops, tests, and maintains device drivers for the Windows operating system, working from a remote location. These professionals are responsible for creating software that allows hardware devices to communicate with Windows, ensuring compatibility, performance, and stability. They typically use programming languages like C or C++, and may work with kernel-mode or user-mode drivers. Collaboration with hardware engineers and other developers is also common, and developers must stay updated with Windows Driver Model (WDM) and related technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Windows driver developer?

To thrive as a Remote Windows Driver Developer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, in-depth knowledge of Windows kernel architecture, and experience with device driver development, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Windows Driver Kit (WDK), Visual Studio, and kernel debugging utilities, as well as certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Windows Developer, are often required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable drivers, troubleshooting complex issues, and collaborating efficiently in a distributed team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Windows driver developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Windows Driver Developers often encounter challenges such as debugging complex kernel-mode issues and maintaining clear communication with dispersed teams. Since driver development requires close interaction with hardware and the Windows operating system, troubleshooting and testing can be more complex from a remote environment. Utilizing robust remote debugging tools, setting up comprehensive virtual testing environments, and maintaining regular communication channels with team members help mitigate these challenges. Collaborating closely with QA, hardware teams, and other developers is also essential for efficiently resolving issues and ensuring driver reliability.

Job description

Senior Backend TypeScript Engineer – Node.js / GraphQL

Remote | Chicago Area Preferred | Full-Time Permanent

Talent Solutions Group is recruiting for a Senior Backend TypeScript Engineer for a growing technology organization developing sophisticated middleware and software solutions used across multiple platforms.

This is a backend-focused engineering role for developers with strong, recent experience building production services using TypeScript and Node.js.

The position can be 100% remote within the United States, although candidates in the Chicago area are preferred.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop scalable backend services using TypeScript and Node.js
  • Build platform-independent middleware and business logic
  • Design and develop GraphQL and REST APIs
  • Develop high-performance, maintainable software used across multiple platforms
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, testing, and business teams to define requirements and technical solutions
  • Design software using modern architecture principles including separation of concerns, high cohesion, low coupling, and SOLID principles
  • Optimize application performance, reliability, and security
  • Troubleshoot complex software and production issues
  • Participate in Agile development, continuous integration, testing, and deployment
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and the continued evolution of the company's software platform
  • Work independently while contributing to a collaborative, high-performing engineering team

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related technical field required
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong recent experience developing backend applications with TypeScript
  • Strong professional experience with Node.js
  • Experience designing and building web-based APIs
  • Strong understanding of asynchronous programming
  • Experience with Git and modern software development practices
  • Understanding of operating system fundamentals
  • Strong software design and architecture fundamentals
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Stable employment history
  • Ability to work independently and contribute quickly in a senior-level development environment

Preferred Experience

  • GraphQL development
  • RESTful API development
  • Distributed systems
  • Angular
  • C/C++
  • Windows, Linux and macOS development environments
  • CI/CD
  • Unit and integration testing
  • Cross-platform middleware development

What We're Looking For

We're particularly interested in engineers who are backend TypeScript developers first.

The ideal candidate has built production backend services using TypeScript and Node.js and understands how to design scalable, maintainable software—not simply someone whose TypeScript experience has primarily been front-end development.

We're looking for self-starters who can understand complex systems, solve problems independently, and make an immediate contribution.

This is a full-time permanent position with a comprehensive benefits package.
