Temporary Construction Inspector

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)

We are currently recruiting for a Temporary Construction Inspector assignment with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Pay Rate: $22.00 - $26.00 per hour
Compensation will be based on the classification assigned by TxDOT and the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Position Overview

This is an entry-level Construction Inspector position designed for individuals seeking experience in transportation and roadway construction projects. The position involves extensive field work, monitoring construction activities, ensuring compliance with project specifications, and documenting project progress.

Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors for extended periods and in various weather conditions. This is not an office-based position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience in construction, maintenance and repair work, construction inspection, engineering support, materials inspection, process inspection, or related fields; OR
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Duties

  • Inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards
  • Monitor construction activities and document project progress
  • Conduct field observations and inspections
  • Review and interpret construction plans, blueprints, schematics, and maps
  • Perform basic calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Complete reports and maintain accurate project records
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project personnel
  • Assist with materials testing and quality assurance activities
  • Ensure adherence to applicable safety standards and regulations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of inspection methods, procedures, and techniques
  • Knowledge of testing methods and processes
  • Basic traffic control and traffic management procedures
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, and maps
  • Proficiency with computers and applicable software programs
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment

Work Environment

This position requires extensive field work and exposure to varying environmental conditions, including:

  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Exposure to temperatures below 32°F and above 100°F for extended periods
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and construction-related hazards
  • Working around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, mechanical parts, and active construction zones
  • Exposure to heights, heat, and construction materials

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and frequently carry up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, ramps, and scaffolding
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain and stand for extended periods
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and inspect construction work in the field
  • Ability to visually assess work quality and observe construction activities

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employees may be required to wear:

  • Hard hat
  • Safety vest
  • Steel-toe boots
  • Respirator and other safety equipment as needed
