Effective communication and the use of collaboration tools (such as Slack, Jira, or GitHub) are essential to bridge gaps and integrate accessibility best practices throughout the development lifecycle. Regularly hosting training sessions and creating clear accessibility guidelines also help foster a more inclusive team culture.

Lead the Future of Technology in Mental Healthcare 💙

At Backpack Healthcare, we're on a mission to make high-quality mental healthcare more accessible for children, adolescents, and families. Technology is at the heart of how we deliver care—and we're looking for an exceptional Director of Technology to help shape what's next.

This isn't your typical technology leadership role.

We're searching for a hands-on technology leader who thrives equally in the boardroom and the codebase. You'll lead our engineering organization, drive our technology strategy, oversee cyber-security and IT operations, and help build innovative AI-powered solutions that improve patient care and business performance.

If you're passionate about building scalable products, mentoring high-performing teams, solving complex technical challenges, and making a meaningful impact in healthcare, we'd love to meet you.

🌟 What You'll Do

As our Director of Technology, you'll serve as the strategic and technical leader responsible for driving Backpack Healthcare's technology vision while remaining actively involved in engineering execution.

💡 Lead Our Technology Strategy
  • Develop and execute the company's technology vision and roadmap.
  • Partner with executive leadership to align technology investments with business goals.
  • Guide technology decisions that support innovation, scalability, security, and long-term growth.
  • Manage technology budgets, vendor relationships, and resource planning.
  • Build project plans, timelines, and delivery roadmaps that keep initiatives on track.
👥 Build & Lead an Exceptional Engineering Team
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing software engineering organization.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate directly in software development through architecture design, coding, technical reviews, and pull requests.
  • Establish engineering best practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, and DevOps excellence.
  • Ensure our platforms remain secure, reliable, scalable, and high-performing.
🚀 Drive Product Innovation
  • Partner closely with business and clinical leaders to transform ideas into impactful technology solutions.
  • Help prioritize product investments based on business value and customer impact.
  • Lead sprint planning, roadmap execution, and delivery accountability.
  • Incorporate customer and provider feedback into product improvements.
🔒 Champion Security & Compliance
  • Own Backpack's cybersecurity strategy and security roadmap.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and healthcare security standards.
  • Lead vulnerability management, incident response planning, and security governance.
  • Partner with auditors and third-party vendors on compliance initiatives.
  • Promote secure software development across the engineering organization.
💻 Oversee IT Operations
  • Lead internal IT operations, SaaS administration, infrastructure, endpoint management, and technology support.
  • Ensure employees have secure, reliable technology to do their best work.
  • Develop policies and standards that strengthen operational excellence.
🤖 Shape Our AI Future

Artificial Intelligence is transforming healthcare—and you'll help lead that transformation.

You'll:

  • Evaluate and implement AI solutions that improve clinical care, operational efficiency, and patient engagement.
  • Design and build innovative AI-powered products while ensuring responsible governance and healthcare compliance.
  • Identify automation opportunities that help our teams focus on what matters most: caring for patients.
✅ What We're Looking ForRequired Experience
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams or technology organizations.
  • Experience as a Director of Technology, Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Principal Engineer, CTO, or similar leadership role.

  • Proven success leading cross-functional initiatives and technical teams.
Technical Expertise

You'll bring experience with many of the following:

  • Writing and reviewing production-quality code
Leadership Skills

We're looking for someone who can:

  • Inspire and develop technical teams
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Balance strategic vision with hands-on execution
  • Build scalable processes while remaining adaptable
  • Influence across departments and drive organizational change
⭐ Bonus Points If You Have
  • Healthcare technology experience
  • HIPAA, HITRUST, or SOC 2 experience
  • Telehealth or behavioral health platform experience
  • Startup or high-growth company experience
  • Experience leading both Product and Engineering
  • Experience deploying AI-powered solutions into production
📈 What Success Looks Like

During your first year, you'll make a measurable impact by:
