Remote Weather Analyst information

What is a remote weather analyst?

A Remote Weather Analyst is a professional who analyzes meteorological data and weather patterns from a remote location, often using digital tools and software. They interpret data from satellites, weather stations, and computer models to provide forecasts, risk assessments, and climate analysis for various industries such as agriculture, aviation, or emergency management. Working remotely allows them to collaborate with teams and clients worldwide, delivering timely weather insights without being tied to a specific physical office. This role typically requires strong analytical skills, proficiency with meteorological software, and a background in atmospheric sciences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote weather analyst?

To thrive as a Remote Weather Analyst, you need a strong background in meteorology or atmospheric science, supported by a relevant degree and experience in data analysis. Familiarity with meteorological software, remote sensing tools, and geographic information systems (GIS) is typically required, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or R. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help analysts interpret data and convey complex findings to diverse audiences. These skills ensure accurate weather forecasting and effective communication of critical information for decision-making across various industries.

How does a remote weather analyst typically collaborate with other team members across different locations?

As a Remote Weather Analyst, collaboration is often conducted through digital platforms such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and shared data tools. You’ll regularly coordinate with meteorologists, data scientists, and operations teams to interpret and communicate weather data effectively. Clear, timely communication is essential, as your analyses often inform critical business or safety decisions. Embracing collaborative software and maintaining proactive updates help ensure that everyone stays aligned, regardless of physical location.

Job description

We are Gelber Group -- Passion for Trading. Powered by Technology.

Headquartered in Chicago with offices across the United States and Europe, for more than 40 years, we have set the bar as one of the industry's most innovative and enduring proprietary trading firms. Our success stems from a relentless pursuit of new trading ideas and careful attention to technology. We believe in a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, and collaboration and we empower each member of our team to have a meaningful impact from the very start of their career with Gelber. We invest in our future through our technology and talented staff, strategically committing resources to move our firm forward and help our people succeed. We trade a little bit of everything here and are always looking to expand into new opportunities. Our flat organizational structure and focus on a true meritocracy attracts individuals with an edge which contributes to our consistent success.

As an Experienced Discretionary Energy Trader, you will have a real opportunity to have a huge impact on the firm. You will work side by side with other successful and talented individuals to capitalize on market opportunities across global energy markets. This role is for someone who flourishes in a fast-paced environment, has a strong work ethic, a competitive attitude, and a proven record of profitability in a trading position for at least 3 years. This is a senior risk-taking role that will be a key idea generator for the desk.

The ideal candidate would work hybrid from our headquarters in Chicago, IL or office in White Plains, NY, though we are open to remote candidates.

What you'll do:

  • Manage your own trading book with a focus on energy markets such as refined products, natural gas, and power
  • Manage your own risk across a portfolio of active strategies and drive trading decisions
  • Analyze market fundamentals including supply/demand dynamics, storage levels, weather patterns, geopolitical developments, and regulatory changes
  • Interpret price action, spreads, and order flow to identify trading opportunities
  • Develop, test, and refine discretionary or systematic-informed strategies using historical and real-time market data
  • Continuously monitor market conditions, news, and macroeconomic and energy-specific events
  • Monitor material changes in levels of risk and variance in PnL, especially focused around deviation from your plans, and proactively communicate those changes to leadership

What we'd like to see:

  • Experience trading energy products such as natural gas or power.
  • Nice-to-have experience includes emissions markets, biofuels, Renewable Energy Certificates, or cross-commodity trading
  • Proven track record independently managing a PnL, or being a senior member of a team driving strategy
  • Prior Proprietary Trading or Hedge Fund PM experience strongly preferred
  • Larger bank or physical trading shop experience may be considered if significant decision-making autonomy existed
  • Defined discretionary edge in energy markets such as fundamental modeling, weather-driven analysis, flow-based insights, or relative value/spread trading
  • Strong understanding of energy market structure (e.g., storage, transportation, seasonality, regional dislocations)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with competitive nature
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work both autonomously and as a team player
  • Quant skills and data literacy are a plus but not required; ability to incorporate data into decision-making is preferred
  • Openness to feedback and willingness to adapt your trading style with changes in market conditions
  • 3+ years of verified, risk-adjusted profitability

The approximate annual base compensation range for this position in Chicago, IL and New York is $72,000 to $120,000. The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package plus benefits, will be determined by a number of factors which include, but are not limited to, the applicant's experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; geographic location; and internal equity. In addition to your salary, our total rewards package includes health benefits, a 401(k) plan, PTO, parental leave, professional development, tuition reimbursement and discretionary bonus, enhancing your overall total rewards package.

Benefits Highlights

  • Gelber offers a wide range of benefits to full-time employees in order to meet you and your covered dependents needs. Our comprehensive benefits offering includes:
