What is a remote volunteer content writer?

Remote Volunteer Content Writers are individuals who create written content, such as articles, blog posts, newsletters, or social media materials, for organizations without being paid and while working from a location outside the organization's physical office. They typically support nonprofits, charities, or community groups, contributing their writing skills to help further the organization's mission. These roles are flexible, allowing volunteers to work from anywhere with internet access, and often provide valuable experience and portfolio pieces for aspiring writers.

Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and meeting deadlines. This role develops and maintains clear, accurate, and configuration-controlled logistics and technical documentation supporting system acquisition, fielding, maintenance, training, and lifecycle sustainment. The successful candidate will work with engineers, logisticians, maintainers, trainers, and configuration-management personnel to turn complex technical information into usable products for operators, maintainers, and program stakeholders.  This position may allow for remote work; however, employees must be able and willing to travel and provide in-office or on-site support as required by customer requirements, project demands, or business needs.

Duties:

Develop, review, and update Integrated Logistics Support plans, lifecycle-support documents, maintenance plans, supportability reports, and fielding documentation.

Prepare and revise technical manuals, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, Standard Operating Procedures, test documentation, and Technical Data Packages.

Analyze engineering drawings, specifications, Logistics Product Data, test results, maintenance data, and engineering changes to support accurate technical content.

Convert complex engineering and logistics information into clear instructions for operators, maintainers, trainers, and support personnel.

Ensure documentation remains consistent with approved system configurations, current technical data, and customer requirements.

Coordinate validation and verification reviews with engineers, logisticians, maintainers, trainers, and other subject matter experts.

Track document revisions, review comments, approvals, due dates, releases, and configuration-control status.

Apply required document numbers, revision identifiers, distribution statements, security markings, and Controlled Unclassified Information markings.

Support Integrated Product Teams, technical reviews, logistics meetings, data calls, and time-sensitive documentation requirements.

Prepare document-status reports, technical summaries, meeting notes, and action-item records while identifying schedule or source-data risks.

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Logistics, Business, Engineering, Communications, or a related discipline. Equivalent directly relevant experience may be considered when permitted by the contract labor-category requirements.

Required Experience:

At least three (3) years of experience in technical writing, technical documentation, Integrated Logistics Support documentation, military technical manuals, or comparable technical-product development.

Experience developing or revising technical manuals, maintenance procedures, logistics plans, lifecycle-support documents, SOPs, technical reports, or training-support materials.

Ability to analyze complex technical information and convert it into clear, accurate, and usable documentation.

Experience coordinating technical reviews and resolving comments with engineers, logisticians, maintainers, trainers, and other subject matter experts.

Experience managing document revisions, approvals, configuration control, and controlled release processes.

Strong writing, editing, proofreading, research, and information-organization skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

Ability to manage multiple documents, priorities, reviews, and deadlines within a part-time schedule.

Desired Experience:

Experience supporting the Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, Army product-manager organizations, NAVSEA, or NSWC Crane.

Experience supporting acquisition logistics, product support, system fielding, or lifecycle sustainment.

Familiarity with Integrated Logistics Support Plans, Operational Logistics Support Summaries, Logistics Product Data, maintenance plans, LORA documentation, and support-equipment products.

Familiarity with SAE GEIA-STD-0007 and military technical-publication standards such as MIL-STD-40051, MIL-STD-3048, or S1000D.

Experience using Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat, XML-authoring tools, graphics applications, or comparable technical-publishing software.

Familiarity with engineering drawings, Illustrated Parts Breakdowns, maintenance-task analysis, provisioning information, and Technical Data Packages.

Experience supporting configuration-controlled Government documentation.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
