What is a Remote Visual FoxPro developer?

A Remote Visual FoxPro Developer is a software professional who specializes in building, maintaining, and upgrading applications using Microsoft's Visual FoxPro programming language, often working from a remote location. Their responsibilities typically include database management, bug fixing, code optimization, and migrating legacy systems to newer platforms. They collaborate with clients or teams online, leveraging their expertise in Visual FoxPro to support business applications that rely on this technology. Since Visual FoxPro is a legacy language, these developers are particularly valuable for organizations with existing FoxPro applications that require ongoing support or modernization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Visual FoxPro developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Visual Foxpro Developer, you need strong programming skills in Visual Foxpro, database management, and a solid background in software development principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with legacy systems, version control tools like Git, and integration with SQL Server or other databases is often required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and communication skills are crucial for effective remote collaboration and troubleshooting. These skills ensure the ability to maintain, upgrade, and support critical legacy applications efficiently while working independently.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Visual FoxPro developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Visual Foxpro Developers often encounter challenges related to legacy code maintenance and integration with newer technologies. Since Visual Foxpro is a discontinued product, documentation and community support can be limited, requiring strong problem-solving skills and resourcefulness. Effective communication with team members is essential, as remote environments can make collaboration more challenging, especially when clarifying requirements or coordinating code changes. To succeed, developers should proactively document their work, leverage online forums, and maintain clear communication channels with clients and colleagues.

Luminary

Job description

About Luminary
Luminary is the AI-native system of action for wealth transfer services.
High net worth households controlling more than $90 trillion in assets are meaningfully underserved by technology that was built for the mass market. As private client investment and banking products have commoditized, these clients are looking for more tax and wealth transfer advice, advice that has previously been impossible to deliver at scale.
Luminary solves this problem by transforming complex estate planning and ownership documents into a structured, proprietary data asset that powers verticalized, agent-driven workflows for tax and wealth transfer services. Our built-in multi-firm collaboration connects a client's full advisor ecosystem, and is the core infrastructure that enables our customers to deliver a highly personalized, end-to-end wealth transfer service offering at scale.
Our 1,000+ customers are leaders across the private client services ecosystem: wealth managers from exclusive multi-family offices through top private banks and trust companies, national tax advisory practices, and law firms among the AM Law 100. Our focus and proprietary data position us to expand from a wedge in wealth transfer advice into large adjacent markets including trust administration and estate distribution.
Founded and led by CEO David Barnard, former Head of Wealth Management at AllianceBernstein, Luminary is backed by 8VC, Fin Capital, Rockefeller Capital, Focus Financial Partners, and several family offices.
How we work
  • Every engineer ships to production multiple times a day. We make small, reviewable changes that go out through CI as soon as they're ready.
  • Modern tooling. Meticulous, Amp, Honeycomb, Temporal, PostHog, Braintrust. We keep the team small and invest in tooling for leverage.
  • Engineers own outcomes. You'll talk to customers and feel their wins and pain points, sit with our in-house subject matter experts, and help us build a great business.
  • We support both remote and in-office preferences. We have an office in NYC near Bryant Park and a lively in-office culture, but if remote works better for you, you'll be in good company.
The Opportunity
Estate planning is a field where there is an iceberg of underlying complexity. A single family might have a dozen trusts, several entities holding assets across them, beneficiaries and trustees who appear in multiple structures but have conditional appointments, and provisions that only take effect under conditions years away. Advisors currently hold that picture together with documents and institutional memory - and human memory is highly fallible. A few firms have tried to record some of these details in Excel spreadsheets, but most don't even try.
Luminary's job is to make it legible instead. We use frontier models to extract the structure from the documents, surface it to our users in easily digestible forms, model the tax and distribution consequences, and connect the client's full set of advisors to the same view. Your job is the part the advisor actually touches: interfaces for reviewing extracted data, editing complex structures, proposing changes, and presenting the whole thing to a client. There is a mix of work on chat agents, surfacing details about what's happening with ambient agents behind the scenes, building complex diagramming tools, and much more.
What you'll do
  • Build AI-native interfaces. You'll build agent chat surfaces that know what the advisor is looking at, ambient agents whose work has to be visible and reviewable, diagrams of entity structures with dozens of relationships, and views that make the implications of a multi-decade projection obvious at a glance.
  • Own the frontend architecture. Component patterns, Apollo cache and state management, performance, and the shared primitives everyone else builds on top of.
  • Partner with design. Day to day with experienced product designers and our Head of Design. We want your opinions early, while things are still cheap to change.
  • Finish things. Empty states, loading behavior, and keyboard paths are the little things that make software feel delightful and trustworthy.
Who you are
Four or more years of software engineering experience, most of it in frontend work, at companies with strong engineering practices.
Strong frontend engineers tend to skew. Some toward visual craft and interaction detail, some toward component systems and data flow. We're hiring at both ends of that range, so tell us which one you are. We have teams that need each.
Beyond that:
  • You care about quality. You notice when something is a half-step slow or has some jank in the animation, and it bothers you enough that you fix it.
  • You're curious about the domain. You'll learn enough about trusts and transfer tax to argue about how they should be presented.
  • Day to day tools
    • React, TypeScript, GraphQL (Apollo), and Playwright
    • We use PostHog and Sentry for debugging, and Meticulous as an additional sanity check on changes.
    • Enough backend experience to shape the API you want to consume.
    • Curiosity substitutes fine for experience on any of it.
  • You communicate well. With half the team remote, overcommunication is the name of the game!
Why you'll love working here
  • You'll be one of a small, senior team of engineers building a complex and high-value product. You'll get a lot of trust and responsibility early on.
  • You'll work closely with our CEO, Head of Engineering, and Head of Product.
  • You'll help build foundational product in a nascent category, with a lot of room to expand into large adjacent markets.
  • You'll ship constantly and hear fast feedback from customers.

We earnestly believe that Luminary represents a one-of-a-kind opportunity to have massive impact at profitable scale, and to have a ton of fun along the way.
Benefits we offer
We believe firmly that happy, healthy employees do their best work. To that end, we offer:
  • 100% employee health insurance coverage (plus 50% dependent coverage)
  • Monthly wellness, commuter, and educational stipends
  • 4 weeks PTO, plus holidays
  • NYC office near Bryant Park, for those who want it. Remote-friendly by default.
  • 401(k) plan
  • Parental leave policy

Compensation
  • Base salary range of $170k-$225k, plus meaningful equity. Actual compensation depends on many factors, including relevant experience and skillset.
  • At this time, Luminary is unable to sponsor employment visas or provide immigration support.
