What is a remote user experience designer?

Remote User Experience (UX) Designers are professionals who focus on improving the usability and accessibility of digital products, such as websites and mobile apps, while working from a remote location. They conduct user research, create wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate with other team members online to ensure a seamless user experience. Remote UX Designers use digital tools to communicate, gather feedback, and iterate on design solutions, making it possible to contribute effectively without being physically present in an office.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote user experience designer?

To thrive as a Remote User Experience Designer, you need proficiency in user research, information architecture, wireframing, and prototyping, often backed by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote teamwork and stakeholder management. These competencies ensure the creation of intuitive, user-centered products while maintaining productivity and alignment across distributed teams.

How do remote user experience designers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working from different locations?

Remote User Experience Designers often collaborate closely with product managers, developers, and researchers through digital tools such as video conferencing, collaborative whiteboards, and project management platforms. Regular communication, clear documentation, and structured feedback sessions are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals and design decisions. Building strong relationships virtually and proactively addressing time zone differences help maintain smooth workflows. This remote setup can foster diverse perspectives and flexibility, but it also requires excellent self-motivation and communication skills to overcome potential collaboration challenges.

Senior UX Researcher, Human Care

Oura

San Francisco, CA • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 4 days ago

Job description

We are looking for a Senior UX Researcher to join our Design Research team, embedded in the Human Care mission. Human Care is where Oura expands beyond tracking into territory with real clinical stakes - products that help members understand and act on their health, connect to care when they need it, and generate evidence that Oura can drive meaningful outcomes.

In this role, you will represent the voice of the user for a mission that sits at the intersection of consumer experience and healthcare. You'll uncover the deep user insights that shape how we build - partnering closely with product managers, designers, and clinical scientists to ensure we're solving the right problems in the right ways with deep appreciation for the nuance and care our members require.

This is a hybrid-remote role, with the expectation to work from our San Francisco offices at least half-time.

What You'll Do
  • Lead user research for the software team connecting members to healthcare partners. Plan, conduct, and analyze a range of user research studies, including ethnographic studies, contextual inquiries, user interviews, surveys, and diary studies to gather both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Bring clinical and regulatory context into product decisions - understanding how FDA-regulated features, HIPAA consent flows, and EHR integrations shape what's possible and what's appropriate for members.
  • Develop research-backed frameworks for how Oura surfaces clinical-grade data (biomarkers, lab results, risk signals) to consumer audiences in a way that's clear, actionable, and emotionally resonant - not alarming.
  • Partner with the clinical and health science teams to ensure research bridges behavioral and physiological insight - understanding not just what users do but what health context drives those behaviors.
  • Build and maintain a longitudinal view of our members from the lens of connected care- their motivations, anxieties, health literacy, and relationship with clinical care - that informs roadmap prioritization.
What You Likely Have
  • Experience: 5+ years of professional UX research experience, with meaningful work at the intersection of consumer product and healthcare, digital health, or clinical technology.
  • Research Expertise: Demonstrated ability to research complex, high-stakes experiences - medical devices, clinical software, diagnostic tools, telehealth, or patient-facing health apps - where decisions have real consequences.
  • Technical Acumen: Deep understanding of health literacy variation across populations and how to design research that accounts for members ranging from highly health-engaged to newly diagnosed to clinical-care-avoidant.
  • Domain Awareness: Experience navigating regulated or compliance-sensitive environments (HIPAA, FDA, IRB) and understanding how those constraints shape research design and product decisions.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong point of view on how to make clinical data legible and meaningful to non-clinical audiences - you've wrestled with the problem of surfacing biomarkers, risk indicators, or diagnostic signals without inducing unnecessary anxiety or oversimplification.
  • Collaboration: Proven experience working in cross-functional teams including PMs, clinicians, designers, data scientists, and commercial teams. You know how to translate research into the language each stakeholder acts on.
  • Can-do attitude: You can operate independently across multiple concurrent workstreams, prioritize ruthlessly, and build a research program that is respected..
Bonus Points
  • Experience researching connected care or care coordination products - understanding how data moves between patients, wearables, and clinical workflows, and where friction emerges in that loop.
  • Familiarity with metabolic health, GLP-1 medications, or cardiometabolic care pathways as a research subject area.
  • Prior work with B2B healthcare products - enterprise dashboards, clinical decision support, payer or health system tools - where the research audience includes clinical administrators, researchers, or care teams in addition to end users.

Oura takes a market-based approach to pay, which may vary depending on your location. US locations are categorized into tiers based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. While most offers will be closer to the starting range, successful candidates' pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, internal peer equity, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
