Remote Tunnel Engineer information

What is a remote tunnel engineer?

Remote Tunnel Engineers are professionals who design, monitor, and manage the construction or maintenance of tunnels from remote locations. They use advanced technologies such as remote monitoring systems, sensors, and specialized software to oversee tunnel projects without being physically present on-site. Their work ensures structural integrity, safety, and efficient project management, often collaborating with on-site teams to address technical challenges. This role is increasingly important for projects in hazardous or hard-to-access locations, improving both safety and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote tunnel engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Tunnel Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, tunnel design, and geotechnical analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional licensure. Proficiency with CAD software, tunnel modeling systems (such as PLAXIS or FLAC), and experience with remote monitoring technologies are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to work independently are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient tunnel design and management from a distance, enabling successful project delivery and risk mitigation.

What are some common challenges faced by remote tunnel engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Tunnel Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with onsite teams across different time zones, troubleshooting issues without physical presence, and ensuring reliable communication with various stakeholders. These challenges can be addressed by leveraging advanced remote monitoring technologies, maintaining clear and frequent communication channels, and establishing standardized protocols for reporting and resolving issues. Building strong relationships with onsite personnel and participating in regular virtual meetings also help ensure smooth project execution and timely problem-solving.

Job description

What we're looking for. Humata Health is seeking a technically proficient and results-driven Solutions Engineer (Technical Delivery & Support) to join our Delivery team. In this role, you will be a key customer-facing technical contact, providing expert support and guidance to customer IT and EMR teams. You will own and manage critical technical integrations and systems, ensuring seamless delivery and ongoing support.
Location: Remote - USA
• What you'll do:
End-to-End Technical Integration Delivery

  • Lead end-to-end design and deployment of integrations involving:
    • 278R EDI transactions (Healthcare Services Review Request for Review and Response)
    • 275 EDI document management workflows for supporting documentation
    • RESTful APIs for synchronous data exchange with EHR, payer, and third-party systems
    • File-based integrations (e.g., SFTP transfers for batched document exchange)
  • Design, build, and optimize data mapping schemas between customer systems and Humata Health platforms, including:
    • EDI X12 to internal data models
    • 278R loops (2000E, 2010EA, 2010EB) to API payload formats
    • Mapping HL7 or custom EMR data structures to internal workflows
  • Manage B2B VPN tunnels, IP whitelisting, and security credential provisioning (SSL certificates, mutual TLS), ensuring secure and compliant data transmission.

Technical Troubleshooting & Quality Assurance
  • Perform payload-level debugging of JSON, XML, and EDI data using tools such as Postman, Insomnia, and EDI Notepad.
  • Build SQL scripts for:
    • Data migration pre-validation and post-migration audits
    • Live data integrity checks across systems
    • Root cause analysis of data mismatches and failed transactions
  • Use packet tracing and VPN diagnostic tools (Wireshark, tcpdump) to debug connectivity issues.
  • Develop automated test scripts for integration validation (e.g., Postman Collections with Newman CLI).
  • Monitor production data flows using internal tools and external monitors, with alerting configured for integration failure scenarios (timeouts, schema validation failures, etc.).

Technical Project Architecture & Documentation
  • Create and maintain sequence diagrams, data flow diagrams, and API schema documentation for all integrations.
  • Document VPN configurations, encryption protocols, and authentication flows (e.g., OAuth 2.0, API key rotation).
  • Define error handling frameworks across integrations, standardizing error response formats and retry logic.

Technical Advisory & Collaboration
  • Serve as the technical SME for customer IT teams, providing guidance on:
    • EMR system connectivity (Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, etc.)
    • Data normalization for authorization workflows
    • PHI/PII encryption standards and HIPAA-compliant data handling
  • Actively contribute to product feedback loops, identifying enhancements to APIs, integration tooling, and internal debugging utilities.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to design reusable integration frameworks and middleware components (e.g., Mirth Connect channels).

☆What you'll need to be successful in this role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent technical field.
  • 5-7+ years of hands-on integration engineering, with direct ownership of EDI and API implementations in a healthcare environment.
  • Deep expertise with EDI X12 standards:
    • Specifically 278R transactions: Service Type Codes, Request/Response data flow, segment looping
    • 275 Attachments for clinical documentation exchange
  • Advanced SQL proficiency (CTEs, window functions, ETL data validation workflows).
  • Hands-on experience with interface engines (strong preference for Mirth Connect or comparable platforms).
  • Expert with REST API protocols, including:
    • Authentication methods (OAuth2, Basic Auth, API keys)
    • API schema validation (JSON Schema, XML Schema Definition - XSD)
    • Rate limiting, pagination, and error handling best practices
  • Strong familiarity with healthcare IT systems:
    • EMRs like Epic (Interconnect API), Cerner, Athenahealth
    • Revenue cycle systems, prior authorization systems
  • Proficient in configuring and troubleshooting B2B VPNs, SSL certificates, mutual TLS, and data encryption protocols (AES-256, SHA-256 hashing).
  • Experience with network troubleshooting tools (e.g., Wireshark, OpenVPN, tcpdump).
  • Solid understanding of HIPAA, HITRUST, and data privacy/security compliance frameworks.
  • Comfortable with automation tools for API testing and monitoring (e.g., Postman, Newman, Swagger Inspector).
  • Experience with healthcare prior authorization workflows, utilization management, and revenue cycle operations.
  • Experience building or working with event-driven architectures (e.g., webhook-based notifications, Kafka).
