What is a remote threat assessment?

A Remote Threat Assessment is the process of evaluating potential security threats to an organization or system from a distance, often using digital tools and methodologies. It involves identifying, analyzing, and prioritizing threats such as cyberattacks, data breaches, or physical security risks without being physically present at the site. Professionals conducting remote threat assessments use various technologies to gather information, assess vulnerabilities, and recommend mitigation strategies. This approach is increasingly important as more organizations operate remotely and rely on digital infrastructure.

How do remote threat assessment professionals typically collaborate with on-site security teams and other departments?

Professionals in Remote Threat Assessment frequently coordinate with on-site security teams through digital communication tools, ensuring that real-time intelligence and risk analyses are promptly shared. They also work closely with IT, incident response, and executive leadership to relay findings and recommend mitigation strategies. Effective collaboration is essential for integrating remote assessments with local protocols, and regular virtual meetings or briefings are common to align on priorities and response plans. This teamwork ensures that threats are addressed holistically, bridging physical and cyber security considerations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote threat assessment specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Threat Assessment Specialist, you need expertise in cybersecurity principles, risk analysis, and threat identification, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SIEM platforms, intrusion detection systems, and certifications such as CISSP or CEH is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and conveying risks to stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for proactively protecting organizational assets and ensuring swift, effective responses to emerging cyber threats.

Job description

Are you passionate about protecting high-profile individuals, organizations, and the public from online threats and targeted violence? Do you have experience in behavioral threat assessment and management, protective security, or a related field and a desire to lead a dynamic, high-impact team?
We are looking for an experienced Threat Monitoring Manager to lead the day-to-day delivery of our threat monitoring work. Reporting to the Head of Insights, US, this role is an opportunity to work at the cutting edge of threat detection, helping to safeguard some of the world's most well-known athletes, public officials, and corporate leaders.
Our threat monitoring team helps clients understand and respond to a range of online harms and potential risks, including threats of violence, doxxing, harmful conspiracies, harassment and abuse, stalking and fixated behavior, non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) and AI-generated intimate images, fraud and impersonation, and coordinated abuse. The Threat Monitoring Manager will be responsible for ensuring this work is delivered consistently, accurately and to a high standard, while creating an environment in which analysts can perform at their best in a challenging and fast-moving field.
This is a hands-on people and delivery management role. You will lead a small team of managers and analysts, translate priorities into clear plans and workflows, maintain high standards in digital collection, investigations and analysis, and ensure risks are escalated appropriately.
You will work closely with the Head of Insights, US, to ensure our threat monitoring engagements are delivered and consistently, accurately and to a high standard. You will have significant responsibility for the team's day-to-day delivery while receiving support and direction from the Head of Insights on client relationships, commercial decisions, and more complex or sensitive issues. You will be comfortable making sound decisions in ambiguous or time-sensitive situations, while knowing when an issue requires escalation to more senior leadership. This role would suit someone who is excited to grow as a manager, deepen their expertise in threat monitoring, and take on increasing responsibility over time.
If you thrive in a dynamic environment, enjoy working across multiple workstreams, and have a passion for work that has impact, we'd love to hear from you.
Remote candidates from across the US will be considered but residency in an area of geographical focus is preferred. Candidates must be based in MA, CO, NY, VA, GA, PA, MD, WI, TN, TX, OR, NJ, or DC. Travel to meet clients across the U.S. will be required.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Manage the threat monitoring delivery portfolio
    • Oversee day-to-day delivery across a defined group of recurring and ad-hoc threat monitoring engagements, ensuring work is delivered on time, within scope, and to a consistently high standard.
    • Manage competing priorities, team capacity and surge support during high-tempo events, identifying delivery or resourcing risks early and working with the Head of Insights, US to resolve or escalate where appropriate.

  • Lead and develop the Threat Monitoring team
    • Lead and develop a team of managers and analysts, setting clear priorities, providing coaching and feedback, and building a culture of accountability, collaboration and high performance.
    • Create clarity and confidence during periods of pressure or uncertainty, ensuring the team remains focused, supported and able to exercise sound judgment.

  • Maintain high standards in digital collection, investigations, threat assessment and analysis
    • Ensure consistently high standards across digital collection, online investigations, threat assessment, analysis and reporting, including appropriate application of Moonshot's methodologies and quality standards.
    • Provide direction and quality assurance on complex or sensitive work, helping the team produce accurate, proportionate and actionable findings.
    • Manage threat escalations - ensure potential threats are assessed and escalated consistently and appropriately, providing sound judgment in ambiguous, rapidly evolving or time-sensitive situations.

  • Support client delivery and commercial planning
    • Support the Head of Insights, US with client delivery, serving as a knowledgeable backup for client communications, presentations, and escalations when required.
    • Provide operational and technical input into bids and proposals, helping senior leadership determine what can realistically be delivered and the staffing, resources and budget required.

  • Improve systems, methodologies and ways of working
    • Identify and implement practical improvements to monitoring workflows, methodologies, quality assurance and team processes.
    • Work with colleagues across Moonshot, including our Product and Engineering team, to translate threat monitoring needs into practical technology requirements, and help test and improve tools that automate digital collection and analysis to ensure they support effective analyst workflows and high-quality delivery.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in protective security, online threat monitoring, behavioral threat assessment and management, OSINT, or a closely related field.
  • Experience managing analysts, researchers, investigators, or another comparable professional team, including coaching, performance management, and staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects or workstreams, balancing planned deliverables with urgent or changing priorities.
  • Strong knowledge of digital collection, online investigative methods, threat monitoring, and/or threat assessment methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical judgment, including the ability to assess incomplete or ambiguous information, make proportionate decisions, and recognize when escalation is required.
  • Strong writing, editing, and quality-assurance skills, with experience producing clear, accurate, and actionable reports and other client deliverables.
  • Experience working with clients or senior stakeholders, including presenting findings and explaining complex or sensitive issues clearly.
  • Strong organizational and resource-management skills, including planning staffing, monitoring delivery against budgets or resourcing assumptions, and identifying capacity or delivery risks.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in fast-moving or high-pressure situations, including incidents requiring rapid response.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call structure and occasionally work outside regular hours in response to significant incidents or events.

Desirable:

  • Flexible public holiday policy with the option to work federal holidays in exchange for a day off at another time.
  • Full private healthcare package, including coverage for partners and children.
  • Dental & Vision Insurance.
