Remote Theoretical Physicist information

What is a remote theoretical physicist?

A Remote Theoretical Physicist conducts research on fundamental physical principles and mathematical models while working from a location outside a traditional academic or corporate setting. They analyze complex theories, develop simulations, and publish findings in scientific journals. Remote physicists often collaborate with universities, research institutions, or private companies through virtual meetings and cloud-based tools. Their work may involve quantum mechanics, relativity, statistical physics, or other advanced topics. Effective communication and self-discipline are essential for success in this role.

What does a typical workday look like for a remote theoretical physicist?

A typical workday for a Remote Theoretical Physicist often involves conducting independent research, analyzing mathematical models or simulations, and collaborating with colleagues via virtual meetings and shared documents. You may spend much of your time reading scientific literature, developing new theories, writing research papers, or programming computational experiments. Regular communication with peers, mentors, or interdisciplinary teams is common, and you may also present findings at virtual seminars or conferences. The structure of your day can be quite flexible, but strong organizational skills are important to manage deadlines, research objectives, and ongoing collaborations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote theoretical physicist?

To thrive as a Remote Theoretical Physicist, you need advanced knowledge of physics, mathematics, and computational modeling, generally supported by a PhD in physics or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python, MATLAB, or C++), mathematical software, and version control systems like Git is usually expected. Strong analytical thinking, self-motivation, and effective written communication are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and sharing complex ideas. These skills are crucial to perform independent research, work effectively with remote teams, and contribute meaningful theoretical advances.

Modeling and Simulation Analyst, Lead
The Opportunity:
As a lead modeling and simulation analyst, you will use your passion for uncovering root causes, developing rigorous analytical insights, and creating solutions that inform mission and capability decisions. You will lead advanced modeling and simulation activities that support quantitative assessments for defense mission objectives. Using the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM), you will design, direct, and execute simulation runs to evaluate force design, operational performance, and system-level capability outcomes. You will integrate and maintain simulation data inputs, conduct scenario-based evaluations, and identify modeling assumptions and limitations that influence analytical results.
You will collaborate closely with government analysts, FFRDC partners, and cross-functional technical teams to conduct research, build simulation scenarios, prepare analytical products, and interpret results. You will develop clear documentation, briefs, and presentations to communicate findings, support stakeholder coordination, and strengthen mission-focused decision-making.
In this role, you will apply a range of analytical and computational methods, including mathematics, statistics, engineering techniques, and operations research approaches such as linear programming, probability theory, and game-theoretic reasoning. You will refine modeling techniques, introduce new tools or programming methods, and help evolve the analytical environment to improve modeling fidelity and analytical throughput. You will mentor junior analysts, coordinate modeling tasks across the team, and contribute to the development of new concepts and analytic approaches that advance mission understanding and operational insights.
Join us. The world cannot wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience with modeling and quantitative analysis supporting DoD force sizing, shaping, and capability analysis, or modeling, simulation, or capability assessment within Intelligence Community analytics
  • 2+ years of experience using AFSIM
  • Experience working with object-oriented programming languages, including Python, Java, C++, C#, R, MATLAB, or Simulink
  • Knowledge of modeling and simulation techniques for operational analysis or system performance assessment
  • Ability to apply a proactive approach to problem-solving and learn new analytical methods as required
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with additional modeling and simulation methods, including discrete event simulation, agent-based modeling, network simulations, physics-based modeling, or stochastic processes
  • Knowledge of classical and modern statistical or computational techniques used in quantitative analysis
  • Ability to develop or refine analytical scripts to support simulation automation or data processing
  • Possession of excellent analytical reasoning and communication skills, to synthesize findings and support internal technical discussions
  • Master's degree in a STEM field

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
