What is a remote technical writer?

A Remote Technical Writer is a professional who creates clear, concise documentation such as user manuals, guides, and online help resources for products or services, while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with subject matter experts, engineers, or product managers to gather information and translate technical concepts into easily understandable content. Remote Technical Writers use digital communication tools to manage projects, conduct interviews, and deliver documentation, making it possible to work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

What does a remote technical writer do?

Remote technical writers create documents that explain complex technical information in simple language that can be understood by anyone. Instead of working in the office, remote technical writers complete their tasks from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote technical writer, your documents may include instruction manuals for power tools, scientific journal articles, and descriptions of computer applications. You research the topic and simplify the industry jargon so that those not in the industry can still understand it. Remote technical writers may be on the staff of a business or writing agency, or they may work as an independent contractor with many different clients.

What key skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote technical writer?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Writer, you need excellent written communication skills, a strong grasp of technical concepts, and relevant qualifications such as a degree in English, communications, or a technical field. Proficiency with documentation tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Markdown, and content management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and meeting deadlines. These skills ensure the creation of clear, accurate documentation that supports users and teams across distributed environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote technical writers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote technical writers often face challenges such as collaborating effectively with subject matter experts across different time zones, staying aligned with rapidly changing project requirements, and maintaining clear communication with development teams. These can be addressed by leveraging collaboration tools (like Slack, Confluence, and Zoom), setting up regular check-ins, and proactively seeking feedback. Building strong relationships with team members and establishing clear documentation processes also help ensure accuracy and consistency in deliverables.

Job description

Do you enjoy digging into challenging technical problems and finding creative solutions? If you're passionate about technology and enjoy learning how complex software systems work, we'd love to hear from you.

This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen both your development and technical troubleshooting skills while working with enterprise software used by organizations around the world. You'll gain experience with leading CRM and ERP platforms, SQL Server, web technologies, and cloud-hosted applications—all while building highly transferable technical skills.

This is not your typical call center support position. You'll work alongside experienced technical professionals to solve complex customer issues, collaborate across Engineering and Professional Services, and continually expand your technical expertise in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Experlogix is seeking a Technical Support Engineer II with strong technical aptitude and a passion for solving challenging software problems. The ideal candidate enjoys understanding how software works, is comfortable troubleshooting databases, web applications, and integrations, and has experience with .NET technologies—or a strong desire to learn them.

In this role, you'll provide high-quality technical support for our CPQ software and its integrations with ERP and CRM platforms while working closely with teammates to resolve complex technical issues and continuously grow your technical knowledge.

*This is a remote position and can be located anywhere within the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Tier II technical support escalations, delivering timely and effective solutions that ensure customer success.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to Experlogix CPQ software, SQL Server databases, ERP and CRM integrations, and web-based applications.
  • Collaborate with Product Development, Professional Services, and other cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise in Experlogix products, Microsoft technologies, ERP systems, CRM platforms, and SQL Server.
  • Document troubleshooting steps, root causes, and resolutions within the company knowledge base.
  • Identify recurring issues and provide feedback that improves product quality, support processes, and the customer experience.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and knowledge-sharing sessions to continually expand your technical skill set.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in technical support, application support, software development, IT support, or similar technical roles.
  • Experience supporting enterprise software solutions such as Microsoft Dynamics, Salesforce, NetSuite, or other ERP and CRM platforms is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft SQL Server with basic to intermediate proficiency writing SQL queries for troubleshooting and data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of web server technologies such as Internet Information Services (IIS), Windows Server, Apache, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and REST-based APIs.
  • Exposure to object-oriented programming concepts or scripting languages is helpful. Experience with .NET is a plus, but a willingness to learn is equally valued.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues while demonstrating a strong sense of ownership.
  • Experience configuring virtual machines and remote desktop connections.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Curiosity, persistence, and a passion for learning new technologies and solving challenging technical problems.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service.
  • Certifications related to Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Dynamics, Salesforce, Azure, or CPQ technologies are a plus but not required.

At Experlogix, we strive to create a culture of engaged, collaborative team members who are passionate about solving problems and helping customers succeed.
